The ECM is so much better than flares. It actually gives you a chance to escape rather than getting insta-locked on after you deflect a locked on rocket attack.

I remember in BF3, while piloting an attack heli, I would use ECMs while hovering perfectly still and the result was that the cloud would linger around and last long enough for me and my gunner to pick off at least 3 or 4 guys all standing still pointing stingers at us that wouldn't lock on for another 15 seconds. Once people switched to RPGs, I'd do runs on them instead.
