Steam Deck - Steam hand held gaming system
Steam has made its own hand held game console. It can be used as a handheld or docked to a tv like the Nintendo Switch. Honestly, this looks like a solid hand held. Everyone that does PC gaming has a steam account and most likely alot of games already in their library.

There are three versions: $399, $529 & $649 depending on the internal storage. Its shipping December of 2021.

The hardware looks great too:

Playstation 5
Until we get solid info from Sony, theres only speculation so far about the final list of features, prices, etc. The latest rumor I just read was this:

https://bgr.com/2020/01/13/ps5-release-date-price-announcement-and-preorder-details-leaked/

If true the price will be $499 and be available for preorder early February. And there will be full backwards compatibility with digitally owned games. And ps4 controllers will be forward compatible, which would explain that new extra back button attachment that was announced.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19)
Hows the Coronavirus impacting you? Thankfully I work from home and my job is not affected yet so I haven't had any work outages. I know quite a few people now having drastically reduced hours in the food industry and they'll be struggling to pay bills here by next week. I haven't been shopping since last Friday and it was a mad house then and only gotten worse from what I've heard. There is coronavirus cases in my county here in NY and it looks like the economy is going to crash. Maybe this new stimulus package will help? If they do send out checks to everyone like the Bush stimulus did, I'm going to have to throw that money right at my roof leak instead of additional food supplies. x_x I have one piece of roof that is not in good shape and apparently has been leaking for a while, buried under masses of snow until it recently all melted. Home insurance guy was a prick and doesn't want to cover it. I'll be switching home insurance companies just because I didn't like the guy. I also think my agent misrepresented to me the actual quality of the insurance package too.

Post in GeForce NOW game streaming service
https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce-now/

Geforce Now exited beta and is fully launched. I own a nvidia shield and have had access to the beta for over a year now. Last time I used it there were connection issues but when it worked, it worked damn good. Last time I used the beta was probably 7 or so months ago so I'm guessing they resolved all their issues since then. This service now makes google Stadia obsolete and I bet some youtubers will be making some videos on it soon. Unlike stadia, nvidia kept the product on beta for almost 2 years I think to fix the bugs.

Also all your steam and epic game accounts can be linked to the service so you don't have to buy any new games. Link the account, tell the service to install the game on nvidia's servers and then start playing at pretty much max settings. Looks like the current price is $5 a month for a limited time with first 3 months free. After that I guess we'll see the full monthly price. But in comparison to stadia, it's drastically cheaper, more reliable and you can stream your games on almost any PC, phone, tablet or nvidia shield.

On a side note my nvidia shield is connected over 5 ghtz wifi and from the comments I've read, if you are going to stream over wifi it needs to be 5 ghtz wifi.

EDIT:

I forgot to mention there is a free account also that has streaming services available for 1 hour sessions, but you'll probably be in a server queue when you go to login.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider
I finished Shadow of the Tomb Raider last week. Ehh. The combat finally kicked in near the end but overall I wasn't impressed with this game.  I've already said my complaints, but the games wasn't all bad. The tombs and exploration is where the game shined. That and the graphics.. the landscape, HDR, lighting effects, etc.. but not the character models. The characters all looked horrible, but damn if the location you were in didn't look stunning. And swimming was done amazingly well, aside from the first swimming location and running out of breath too easily until you get some holding your breath upgrades. Water, swimming and the use of water in tombs was all done exceptionally well. The extra challenge tombs that come with the complete edition didn't appeal to me as much as I thought they would. Mostly because they can be played with multiple players with matchmaking because they are designed to be either played solo or with an extra player. Theres also an online scoreboard for timed runs. Because of this design choice the extra challenge tombs aren't really exploration based and I didn't see any artifacts or anything like that to interact with. Overall it was an ok game, but my expectations were definitely way to high after playing the first two over the past couple years which caused my enjoyments issues. The first two games definitely excelled in combat, whereas this one focused more on puzzle solving with tombs. Just seemed so off putting to do such a drastic shift.

Oh, and the ending sucked IMO.

Dualshock 4 Back Button Attachment
There is a lot to digest here.

The current product

Why wait to the end of the generation to make this? I have my thoughts on that later. Its interesting, but I have questions about it's ergonomics. That being said, this is a step in the right direction. Xbox has had its elite controller for years now. A $30 add on is nice rather than a $200 controller. Scuf and Cinch are great concepts but the quality is notorious. These 3rd party companies take a controller and mod it for you. Its not original hardware, its stuff compiled on top of the DS4's hardware, making it do things it wasn't originally intended to do. The paddles and buttons fail after less than a year. For the price you pay its unacceptable, but for the convenience it provides, people pay up.  Nacon and Astro makes controllers but they're not faithful to the DS4 design, and are often large, clunky, and cheap feeling. With something made by Sony for their product I'd hope this lasts. But I have a feeling this will drain your battery even faster.

Again, why?

I have a feeling this is just a test run, or a preview. Maybe this OLED screen on the back is what is actually on the front of the DS5? Maybe the DS5 has programmable back buttons? Maybe they're trying to perfect the DS5 version by putting this out there? Scuf isn't exactly competition right now, They're paying Sony for a licenses to be the official "pro" controller of PS4. But Sony could make way more money with this accessory if its a success, or moreso with their official controller next gen.

Should you get this?

It depends. This is a niche accessory. If you're playing mostly single player games don't bother. If you like to play FPS and want to be super sweaty? I couldn't recommend looking into this enough. Having back buttons is a huge advantage. Being able to reload and jump without ever taking your thumb off the right stick is something you won't be able to live without once you taste it for the first time. And if you're the ultimate MLG pro try hard, this thing has 3 profiles that you can swap on the fly. Scuf will charge you an extra $15 for a similar feature that you need a weird tool to adjust and can't be done on the fly mid game.

This is the evolution of the controller we need. Not motion sensors, game functional screens, touch pads, or light bars. More buttons that can be programmed the way you want them to be.

Strider's FFXIV Nier Raid Impressions
So after having done the Nier raid twice now I definitely have to say the FFXIV team and Yoko Taro knocked it our of the fucking park. This is probably my favorite 24-man in the entirety of XIV and favorite story based raid in the entire game. The boss fights are extremely fun and interesting, the enemies are well modeled and varied to say the least (some of which don't appear in Automata (they might as I still haven't beaten it yet but from what I could tell quite a few of them are original to this raid)), and that soundtrack is fucking amazing (the final boss theme is fucking beyond amazing and I so want it now, looks like I'll be buying the next Shadowbringers soundtrack just for it (its a remix of Weight of the World and it's tear inducing)). Not to mention the story for it is damn good and I get the feeling we might be meeting some more familiar faces in the next two raids (I won't ruin it unless you've already seen or been told but I wasn't honestly expecting to see who I saw at the end of the raid even if it was kinda spoiled in the trailer). Now if only I could win the god damn roll on the 2B armor set so I can be happy and have my 2B look (I want those fucking thigh boots god damnit, they'd fit so well with a current glamour set-up that I have).

I look forward to patch 5.3 and 5.5 for the next two sets of this raid because if they're anything like this I'll be more then happy (now to get around to beating Automata, I'm almost done with 9S's route/B ending. Should hopefully have that done this weekend if I don't keep getting distracted by side quests or the XIV raid (I must have my 2B glamour)).

Also I take back what I said about the 5.1 Samurai changes. While I still don't think we're where we should be dps wise I'm feeling like we're in a better place then we were prior to this. Now to try out the new Ninja changes and see if I pick up Ninja as my secondary main.

*sigh* I really hope this is beta only but after all that talk of UAV being a high streak, its 4 kills on the beta. Without a mini map its an overwhelming advantage for one team to see everything on a mini map and you don't get to see where they are when they shoot. I was ok with the lack of mini map until this came to light. And you have to suffer through this until level 12 to get the Ghost perk. This is just going to force Ghost and rocket launchers as a necessity. Terrible.
