Well there is a friend list type thing were you can see if they are online... and Id imagine youd have to be in the same server... but characters can be transferred to different servers upon request. I'd imagine larger games with multiple servers are going to limit that Borderlands-like ability to just appear at a buddies side.

The friends list will tell you exactly where your friends are at but sadly no ability to travel where they are (there are areas where certain classes can't go (story missions and on your ship)) and yes you need to be on the same server. But with fleet passes you can just hit it and meet at the Republic/Imperial Fleet (whichever side you're on) and go from there.

Well, what server are you on? Playing with someone I know would be awesome.
