Beat KOTOR I before you do. I've never died more than 3 times in a row without going back to the station. Some missions are amongst the open world and some take place in a secluded location that has its entrance covered by a green field. Once you enter that is your mission, anyone else that enters will enter their own stand alone mission. Unless you invite or are invited to join a group, Then you both may join. If you are different classes their mission might not count for you even if...

..it is the same. I encountered this once. I was a Sith Warrior and joined a Sith Inquisitor, I had to redo the mission to get credit for it after I helped him. If you help someone fight a boss in an open world mission, you probably wont get any credit, loot or XP for it if they struck the 1st blow or have already significantly weakened the boss.
