Leo refuses to leave burning building, is found guarding litter amid smoke
SYDNEY - A dog was hailed as a hero on Sunday after it risked its life to save a litter of newborn kittens from a house fire, rescuers said.In a case which gives the lie to the saying about "fighting like cats and dogs," the terrier cross named Leo had to be revived with oxygen and heart massage after his ordeal. Fire broke out overnight at the house in Australia's southern city of Melbourne, where he was guarding the kittens.
Firefighters who revived Leo said he refused to leave the building and was found by them alongside the litter of kittens, despite thick smoke.
"Leo wouldn't leave the kittens and it nearly cost him his life," fire service Commander Ken Brown told reporters.
The four kittens also survived the fire and on Sunday Leo, whom firefighters nicknamed Smoky, was again back at the house.
    awwwwwwwwwwww
I don't think my dog would leave the other animals either, she thinks the pig is her baby

    Subject: Revelations Chapter 13
This will make you re-think: A Trivia question in Sunday School:
How long is the beast allowed to have authority in Revelations?
Revelations Chapter 13 tells us it is 42 months, and you know what that is.
    Almost a four-year term of a Presidency.
All I can say is 'Lord, Have mercy on us!'
According to The Book of Revelations the anti-Christ is: The anti-Christ
    will
be a man, in his 40's, of MUSLIM descent, who will deceive the nations with
persuasive language, and have a MASSIVE Christ-like appeal....the prophecy
    says
that people will flock to him and he will promise false hope and world
    peace,
and when he is in power, will destroy everything..

    The Revelation
    of St. John the Divine
    Chapter 13
    The Two Beasts
1 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, Dan. 7.3 having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. Rev. 17.3--0.-12
2 And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: Dan. 7.4-6 and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.
3 And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.
4 And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?
5 ¶ And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.
6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, Dan. 7.8, 25 ; 11.36 to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.
7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: Dan. 7.21 and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.
8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life Ps. 69.28 of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
9 If any man have an ear, let him hear.
10 He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: Jer. 15.2 he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.
11 ¶ And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.
12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.
13 And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men,
14 and deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.
15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.
16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:
17 and that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

This is what we've got going on yo >.<
Our well lobbied government legislates whats good for us. They have always decided what is poison, what is a dangerous or hazzardous substance. The DEA enforces laws banning drugs our government decided are bad for us; unfortunately this includes hemp, one of the most durable fibers known and an easy alternative to tree pulp for paper products. The FDA and EPA allows You to be poisoned via vaccinations, public water, additives in food, toxins in the air you breath.
When you develop an illness over the counter or street drugs can't cure you turn to your doctor and your doctor turns you over to big pharma as he/she has been conditioned to do since med school. The pharmaceutical companies then profit off of you until the ailment kills you/you die. Many medications prescribed to people are substances they will have to take daily for the rest of their life. The younger you are when you are diagnosed with a treatable disease the longer the pharmaceutical companies can profit off of you.
Big business, money cozying up to government is nothing new. The haves can always talk louder and bribe better the have nots. Big oil, weapons manafacturers and big pharma have it made, and our government has a history of supporting the bad guy until enough US civilians get sick they have to admit they were wrong. I'm sure we've all seen DEET being sprayed all over those kids in black and white.

Our leaders live high while we're being poisoned and opressed and our planet is in peril, we're talking about hundreds of millions of refugees with their homes under water by the time we're old farts and our kids are old enough to see the disasterous outcome and ask why the fuck didnt you do something to stop this? Katrina and Gustav were previews of a pissed off climate and what FEMA intends to do about us.

The system was far from perfect before George W stole the first election from Al Gore in 2000, but for eight years his executive administration has done an outstanding job of preventing our constitutional rights and liberties from protecting us anymore. The war on terror gave this illegal president the power to consider any one on the planet a terrorist and subject to punishment and depending on which kind of terrorist you are you might very well find yourself not protected by the Geneva convention ie torture because the military commissions act overrides the convention.

This presidency has played the American people for suckers. W denied climate change, relied on documents provided by research groups that were funded by Exxon; eventually the rest of the world twisted his arm via Kyoto protocol and W had to admit global warming was real. Consider where we are now in terms of climate destabilization as compared to wtf is global warming eight years ago. Its a shame Al Gore backed down in 2000, as a consolation prize we got An Inconvenient Truth.

W needed a way for him and his circle to profit off his presedency and keep the progressively larger ADD crowd focused on something besides himself. The solution was "terrorist attacks" on 9/11, an invasion of middle eastern countries and a prolonged war in Iraq. Big oil has (almost) all of the pipelines it ever dreamed of thanks to the war on terror. These fucks charged you over 4 bucks for a gallon of gas all fucking summer. The war even conveniently gets rid of some of the depleted uranium piling up around here. Its in the bullets our soldiers are shooting terrorists with. All that radioactive crap has to go somewhere right? When the Iraqui's start getting medical treatment for all the shit this war has done to them big pharma will explode with new wealth; I'm sure they're all about ready for zoloft now. Put down the gun and pick up the pills like we do in America.

The only ~almost~ benefit we can see come from this presidency is that it has been so alarmingly bad that people who used to not give much of a shit about politics educated themselves and spread the word. The more you study the key players, their associations, their legislation, all of W's executive orders, the more we return to the scene of their crimes; the more there is to learn and the more disturbing it gets. Pretty fucking disturbing actually.

Repeal the “Military Commissions Act of 2006” and thereby restore the ancient right of habeas corpus and end legally sanctioned torture by U.S. government agents
Restore the ”Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act” (FISA) and thereby outlaw warrantless spying on American citizens by the President of the United States
Give Congress standing in court to challenge the President's use of "signing statements" as a means to avoid executing the nation's laws
Make it illegal for government agents to kidnap people and send them abroad to be tortured by foreign governments
Provide legal protection to journalists who expose wrong-doing by the Federal government

Bottled water has contaminants too, study finds

    Buzz up!
Sweden's second city Gothenburg has decided to stop buying bottled water due to environmental concerns and will only provide civil servants with tap water, a city councillor said Thursday.(AFP/File/Teh Eng Koon)
    - Tests on leading brands of bottled water turned up a variety of contaminants often found in tap water, according to a study released Wednesday by an environmental advocacy group.
The findings challenge the popular impression — and marketing pitch — that bottled water is purer than tap water, the researchers say.
However, all the brands met federal health standards for drinking water. Two violated a California state standard, the study said.
An industry group branded the findings "alarmist." Joe Doss, president of the International Bottled Water Association, said the study is based on the faulty premise that a contaminant is a health concern "even if it does not exceed the established regulatory limit or no standard has been set."
The study's lab tests on 10 brands of bottled water detected 38 chemicals including bacteria, caffeine, the pain reliever acetaminophen, fertilizer, solvents, plastic-making chemicals and the radioactive element strontium. Though some probably came from tap water that some companies use for their bottled water, other contaminants probably leached from plastic bottles, the researchers said.
"In some cases, it appears bottled water is no less polluted than tap water and, at 1,900 times the cost, consumers should expect better," said Jane Houlihan, an environmental engineer who co-authored the study.
The two-year study was done by the Washington-based Environmental Working Group, an organization founded by scientists that advocates stricter regulation. It found the contaminants in bottled water purchased in nine states and Washington, D.C.
Researchers tested one batch for each of 10 brands. Eight did not have contaminants high enough to warrant further testing. But two brands did, so more tests were done and those revealed chlorine byproducts above California's standard, the group reported. The researchers identified those two brands as Sam's Choice sold by Wal-Mart and Acadia of Giant Food supermarkets.
In the Wal-Mart and Giant Food bottled water, the highest concentration of chlorine byproducts, known as trihalomethanes, was over 35 parts per billion. California's limit is 10 parts per billion or less, and the industry's International Bottled Water Association makes 10 its voluntary guideline. The federal limit is 80.
Wal-Mart said its own studies did not turn up illegal levels of contaminants. Giant Food officials released a statement asserting that Acadia meets all regulatory standards. Acadia is sold in the mid-Atlantic states, so it isn't held to California's standard. In most places, bottled water must meet roughly the same federal standards as tap water.
The researchers also said the Wal-Mart brand was five times California's limit for one particular chlorine byproduct, bromodichloromethane. The environmental group wants Wal-Mart to label its bottles in California with a warning because the chlorine-based contaminants have been linked with cancer. It has filed a notice of intent to sue.
Wal-Mart spokeswoman Shannon Frederick said the company was "puzzled" by the findings because testing by suppliers and another lab had detected no "reportable amounts" of such contaminants. She said Wal-Mart would investigate further but defended the quality of its bottled water.
The researchers recommend that people worried about water contaminants drink tap water with a carbon filter.
    **why am I not surprised?

Ladywriter got a reaction from Pchan in Animals have personalities, too
Mathematical model helps explain how and why temperaments develop
We know our siblings and in-laws have personalities — sometimes to a fault. But science recently has revealed that such individual differences are widespread in the animal kingdom, even reaching to spiders, birds, mice, squid, rats and pigs. Now a new mathematical model helps to explain how and why such animal temperaments develop over time.
The model explains a central question of both animal and human personality — why certain individuals are more rigid or flexible than others, and why some change their behavior in response to changes in their environment while others do not.
The answer, says Franz Weissing of the University of Groningen, the Netherlands, comes down to costs and benefits. A group in which both rigid and flexible personality types co-exist makes for an optimal system, his model shows.
The field of animal-personality study is starting to gain some substance and credibility, said University of Texas psychologist Sam Gosling, who does research in this field.
"When I started doing this, like 10 years ago, things were really different. I remember people thought it was anthropomorphic [to use the term animal personality]," said Gosling, who was not involved in the recent study.
Prestigious scientific journals are publishing research articles explicitly on the topic of animal personality, he said.
"I think it does reflect a new sense of respect in the field and I think it's opening up all kinds of important opportunities and allowing us to test questions we simply couldn't test without animal studies," Gosling said.
    Duck food
Weissing and his colleagues ran various model simulations of scenarios that included a resource as well as responsive and unresponsive animals. He said the new model shows, for example, when it's optimal for animals to react to a change in food and when it's not. It turns out that competing personalities help to keep a healthy balance in a group.
Say you have a duck pond in which, every day, twice as much food is scattered along the right side of the pond, leaving the left side sparse, Weissing said. The ducks learn to paddle to the right side to forage. Then one day, say, more food shows up on the left side of the pond, leaving the right with a dearth.
Experiments have shown that some of the ducks were checking out the left side of the pond all along and will notice and swim to the food on the left. Other ducks, however, will stick to their routine and continue about their business of scarfing up the little bit of food still on the right side.
The responsive ducks benefit from their quick move to the big pile of food, while the unresponsive ducks could starve, or at the very least, not get a bellyful.
The tables turn if too many ducks were to respond and head over to the left side of the pond. In this model scenario, the competition on that side of the pond would skyrocket, leaving some of these seeming smarty pants with little food. Meanwhile, the unresponsive ducks would benefit in this scenario, because while they would be left with a smaller portion of food, there would be hardly any competition for it.
In some of the model simulations, responsiveness could also be a waste of energy. If say the food never moves to the other side of the pond, the proactive ducks could exhaust themselves to no avail.
In the end, a balance between ducks that scan for change and ducks that stick with the routine would benefit the overall population.
    Individuals coexist
The researchers also found animal personalities tend to persist. That's because, as the adage goes, practice makes perfect. Individuals who are responsive gain experience, so it behooves them to continue such behavior in the future.
"Individuals that have been responsive before have a slight advantage in collecting or interpreting environmental cues," Weissing told LiveScience. "This is a plausible assumption, since the performance of individuals generally improves with the experience they have."
Similar personality types also exist in humans. "Some humans behave rather routine, in a rigid way. And others behave in a rather flexible way," Weissing said. "The first type is rather traditional, conservative, always following the trodden path of the past, whereas the other type is more interested in change, interested in the environment, always sampling the environment."
While the model simulations didn't directly analyze human behavior, Weissing said there is a crossover between non-human animals and the rest of the animal kingdom.
The research, detailed online this week by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, was funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research.

Ladywriter got a reaction from Sledgstone in billionz dollar bail out
The Bush administration's proposal to bail out some of Wall Street's biggest players with an unprecedented transfer of public wealth to the private sector sent shock-waves throughout the nation.
Already deep in deficit, the administration wants to borrow $700 billion dollars -- in addition to the $900 billion already spent this year to prop up troubled lending institutions and deal with the fall-out from the housing crisis -- and entrust it to Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, fresh from a long run on Wall Street himself. He'd then buy up worthless paper from struggling banks.
Who would get the money? Nobody knows. Paulson says he wants to hire Wall Street firms to oversee the process.
Under Bush's plan, the taxpayer would get little, if anything, in return. The whole thing would happen without Congressional oversight, save for a semi-annual report on the process, and Paulson's actions would be beyond challenge in the courts.
It is an economic coup d'etat in the making. And people are talking about little else. Here's 10 things that have been on our radars ...
    there's this now
Demand that the Bailout Legislation Be Rejected
We are witnessing a bankers' coup d'etat. In the name of saving the economy from a crisis created by their own greed and immense profits, Bush and the biggest bankers have taken a country and a people hostage.
"Give us your money and tear up what's left of your Constitution or we will sink your economy," is the message from Wall Street and the Bush Administration. "Give us the power and money we demand or you will be left jobless from a new economic depression."
Under the pretext of the banking crisis, the Bush Administration is changing the way this country operates. This is not simply taking trillions of dollars from the people and giving it to the richest bankers to do with as they see fit.
Click here to send your letter to Congress:
    http://www.impeachbush.org/site/R?i=sjPOnjcYiWQh-ruFgNa6FQ..
Congress is poised to vote to give the Executive Branch of government, and specifically the White House's political appointees in the Treasury Department, the absolute right to take our money and give it to domestic and foreign banks and corporations without any oversight of elected officials, from the courts, or from the people.
The new legislation states: "Decisions by the Secretary [of the Treasury] pursuant to the authority of this Act are non-reviewable and committed to agency discretion, and may not be reviewed by any court of law or any administrative agency." The Legislation allows the Treasury Department to appoint the same bankers who created the crisis to administer and dictate the use of trillions of our tax dollars.
We will not stand by and let the Bush Administration formalize its vision of a "government of, by and for the richest bankers."
The new system institutionalizes theft on a grand scale. Lehman Brothers bankers will receive $2.5 billion in bonuses after their company went bankrupt last week, but the new dictatorial authority under the White House and Treasury Department has ruled out any relief for the millions of working families who are being foreclosed.
We live in a $15 trillion annual economy. Instead of taking our tax dollars and giving it to the already rich and powerful, these funds should be used provide to decent paying jobs, affordable housing, health care and a good education for our children. There is another way!
Now is the time to hear the voice of the people. A spineless Congress authorized Bush's illegal war in Iraq and rubber-stamped the Patriot Act. Now they are being herded like sheep again to give the White House and Wall Street dictatorial control over the people's money.
[rant]this is some bullfuckinshit Again Bush admin is wipin its ass with the constitution No bail outs w/o some kind of fuckin accountability. Feds just printin more money. Rescue the insurance company, hmm.. not for you or me with our trivial investements, its for asshats like Larry Silverstien who profited from the towers. Where's all the money right? Its in the hands of a few and they're mismanaging it, us, the planet cuz of greed. Ladywriter got a reaction from Myk JL in Viagra But Not Birth Control? Ask McCain to Answer Straight
John McCain - ironically enough, while aboard the
"Straight Talk Express" - was unable to answer when
confronted with a simple question: Shouldn't
insurance companies be required to cover birth control
    if they cover Viagra?
That was months ago, and he still hasn't answered
the question clearly! I think it's time he answers,
and next week's debate presents the perfect
    opportunity.
Watch the video and tell debate moderator Bob
Schieffer that John McCain owes millions of voters an
    answer about birth control >>
    http://www.care2.com/go/z/e/AAMav/WLmw/ANR12
There's a reason John McCain "certainly do[es] not
want to discuss that issue," as he stammers in the
clip: Because his record shows that he's dangerously
out of touch with a nation where 98 percent of women
use birth control at some point in their lives. As
recently as 2005, McCain voted specifically against
requiring insurance companies to cover prescription
    birth control.
Next Wednesday's debate is the last chance for
voters to hear from the candidates in an open forum!
    And we can't afford a president who's out-to-lunch on
issues affecting women and their families.
It's time to demand real answers. Watch the
video of McCain's birth control "straight talk"
and insist that he is asked: Why should men get
insurance coverage for Viagra while some women pay the
full cost out-of-pocket for prescription birth control?

Ladywriter got a reaction from Myk JL in No blank check for wall street
Last week Wall Street's risky schemes collapsed, threatening global meltdown -- the next 48 hours could be even more important, deciding America's financial fate for decades to come. Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson, a former investment banker, is strong-arming Congress for $700,000,000,000 of our money to bail out the financiers who created this mess.[1] That's $700 billion, roughly what the war in Iraq has cost; and without oversight, safeguards and help for ordinary struggling Americans, the consequences could be as dire.[2]
Congressional leaders are in a race against time, and wavering. Some, like Senator Chris Dodd, have started drafting better proposals -- making those who created this crisis on Wall Street bear more of the cost and share any benefits, creating safety nets for Main Street, and introducing regulation to stop a repeat of this catastrophe.[3] There’s no shortage of decent solutions, but with the markets yo-yoing and Paulson pushing for a deal in days, Congress looks all too likely to accept the bulk of what experts are now calling a "financial coup d’etat" -- unless the American people speak up loud, clear and fast.[4] Follow the link below now to send a message to your own representatives:
    http://www.avaaz.org/en/wall_street_bailout
Regardless of who becomes the next President, the rescue package we pass now will fundamentally change our national and personal finances, shaping our future for years to come. Will we fix this broken system now while we have the chance, or simply hand the financiers $2000 for every man, woman and child in the USA -- trusting them to clean up their own mess, socialising the costs and privatising the profits once again?
Both Democrats and Republicans are poised on the edge of an unprecedented decision; at this moment, our voices could make all the difference. As Americans, we need urgently to stop our leaders from surrendering to events and inspire them to choose the right course. If we fail, we, our families, and people all around the world will suffer the consequences. So let's ask our representatives to stand up for the public good and chart a decent course out of this crisis today, using the tool at this link:

Ladywriter got a reaction from Crazy Gravy in Paid for by big oil
Right now, even as they make the biggest profits in American
history, oil companies like ExxonMobil are getting $13 billion
    in tax breaks.
But all that could change when Congress comes back to Washington
this week. Environmental champions like Speaker Pelosi are
working to strip these tax giveaways and make a major investment
in clean energy like wind and solar power.
Can you tell Congress to end tax breaks for big oil and invest
    in clean energy?
Click below to sign the petition:
    http://action.lcv.org/ct/67wd5pK1MXDe/
Unfortunately, too many Republicans in Congress are paid for by
Big Oil and are opposing efforts to repeal these tax breaks -
even at a time of record oil profits. To create a new energy
future in this country, we need to send Congress a clear
    message.
    The petition says:
"With rising gas prices and America's growing dependence on oil,
it is clear that too many politicians in Washington are paid for
    by Big Oil.
"We need to stop letting oil companies run our energy policy. To
make America truly energy independent, we call on Congress to
boost production of clean energy, end all tax breaks for oil
companies, and resist the false promise of drilling in
    environmentally sensitive areas.
"We need an energy policy that isn't paid for by Big Oil."
After you sign, please forward this message on to your friends
    and family.
There could be votes to repeal tax breaks for the oil industry
and instead invest in clean, renewable energy as soon as this
    week.
If enough people join this petition, we can raise the profile of
this issue - and force Congress to decide whose side they're on.
With rising gas prices, increasing global warming pollution, and
America's growing dependence on oil, it is clear that too many
politicians in Washington are paid for by Big Oil.
Tell Congress to end tax breaks for Big Oil and invest in clean
    energy instead.

Ladywriter got a reaction from CabbitGirl in Rikki-Tikki-Tavi
Rikki-Tikki-Tavi is a short story in The Jungle Book (1894) by Rudyard Kipling about the adventures of a valiant young mongoose.
An English family, who have moved to a bungalow in the British Sugauli (former British sp. Segowlee) cantonment in Bihar State, India, discover a young mongoose half drowned from a storm and decide to keep it as a pet. The young mongoose, called Rikki-Tikki, soon finds himself confronted by two dangerous, murderous cobras, Nag (the word is Hindi for "cobra") and his even more dangerous mate Nagaina, who had the run of the garden while the house was unoccupied. After that first encounter with the cobras, Rikki's first true battle is with Karait, a dust brown snakeling who threatens the boy (Teddy). Although Rikki is inexperienced and the snake, because of its deadly venom and small size, is an even more dangerous foe than a cobra, the mongoose defeats him.
At Nagaina's urging, Nag plans to kill the human family to get the house empty again so they can have free run of its garden. She also reminds him that their eggs would hatch soon (as they might the next day) and that their children will need room and quiet. Nag goes to the bathroom to wait to kill the "big man", and goes to sleep while waiting. Rikki grabs Nag by the head above the hood. Nag thrashes about furiously, and the noise wakes the man, who fires both barrels of a shotgun into Nag, blowing him in two pieces and almost hitting Rikki. Nag is thrown on the rubbish heap, where Nagaina mourns for him and vows vengeance.
Rikki, well aware of the threat, enlists a tailor bird to distract Nagaina while he searches for her eggs. However, while he finds and destroys most of the brood, Nagaina finds the family at the dinner table and threatens to kill the family's son with her poisonous bite. Alerted to the crisis, Rikki races to his family with the last egg. Once there, Rikki claims he killed Nag himself while showing the egg to distract Nagaina long enough for the man to pull the boy to safety. Nagaina snatches the egg and flees to her hole while Rikki pursues her inside. The underground fight is not described, but after an agonizingly long wait, Rikki comes out of the hole in triumph having killed Nagaina. With that victory, Rikki spends the rest of his days defending the family garden where no snake would dare enter.
A 25 minute animated version which first aired on CBS on January 9, 1975 was directed by Chuck Jones and narrated by Orson Welles. Family Home Entertainment has released this version of Rikki-Tikki-Tavi on both VHS and DVD formats.

    Cypriot Channel, Turkey —
Three Turkish tuna fishing vessels surrounded the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise in the Cypriot Channel, with crew from one vessel attacking the ship with lead weights. Greenpeace is in the area to call for an end to unsustainable fishing and to call for the establishment of a marine reserve between Cyprus and Turkey.
We flew over the ships early this morning to document the activities of tuna fishing vessels.
Three Turkish vessels then surrounded the Greenpeace ship -- one colliding with the Arctic Sunrise and causing superficial damage midships on the starboard side. The tuna ship's crews then started hurling lead fishing weights of around four centimetres at the Greenpeace ship. Gunfire was heard. Amazingly, no one was injured but the Greenpeace helicopter was damaged and is now inoperable.

The Greenpeace ships Captain notified the Turkish Iskenderun Port Authority and reported the damage.
"This unprovoked attack against the Arctic Sunrise, a peaceful protest ship, endangered the safety of our crew and ship and is completely unacceptable, we urge the ships owners to instruct their crews to return to port for an immediate investigation," said Greenpeace International Oceans campaigner Karli Thomas, on board the Arctic Sunrise.
    The real bad guys: governments
"We understand that these guys are angry -- we're angry too. But the real problem has been caused by the refusal of governments to take action to regulate an industry that is fishing itself to death," Said Banu Dokmecibasi, Greenpeace Mediterranean Oceans Campaigner.
Scientists from the international body which regulates tuna fishing, ICCAT, recommended a maximum sustainable catch of 15,000 tons of bluefin tuna, to be divided among all the countries licensed to fish in the Mediterranean. The Turkish fleet comprises more than 200 purse seiners in total, with enough catch capacity to fish the entire 15,000 tons. Turkey has an allocated quota of less than 900 tons.
We're calling on the Turkish government to support the protection of the Cypriot Channel, one of the most productive tuna breeding areas in the Eastern Mediterranean, as a marine reserve. The Turkish government should immediately revoke all permits for domestic fleets to fish in the channel.

"Marine reserves are urgently needed to protect the future of marine life, including tuna. The population of tuna is close to extinction - if we don't protect the breeding and spawning grounds now there will be no fish for the future. By protecting tuna, fishermen can protect their own future." Said Banu Dokmecibasi, Greenpeace Mediterranean Oceans Campaigner.
Greenpeace is campaigning for a global network of fully protected marine reserves covering 40 percent of our oceans as an essential way to protect our seas from the ravages of climate change, to restore the health of fish stocks, and protect ocean life from habitat destruction and collapse. As part of this campaign, the Arctic Sunrise is currently in the Mediterranean documenting threats to the sea and promoting the designation of marine reserves.
At the same time, our vessel Esperanza is calling for marine reserves in the Pacific. You can add your voice to our efforts without risking seasickness or getting anything thrown at you.
