This seems semi shocking. But I think this does more damage to E3. Not that it was somehow solely Nintendo. This I feel has ultimately been going on for years now dating back to PS Move & Kinect. And that disaster that was Sony's PS4 conference isn't helping either. I think the damage E3 will have this year will be complete once MS announces Xbox The Third before E3.

 

On the other hand Nintendo was already damaged dating back to the end of Game Cube. And its (literal) flailing with the white dwarf that was Wii hasn't so far helped Wii U.

Social media is obviously much larger than it has been in previous years. Instead of having to reveal something at a large event like the E3, the companies will get more headlines and attention by making their announcements in self promoted individual events rather than sharing the spot light with their competitors. With Sony and Microsoft announcing their new hardware in their own respective conferences, the E3 is going to have to keep focused on new game titles, developers, new 3rd party hardware platforms, etc. like they usually do for regular non-next gen years.

 

Nintendo has gone in such a different direction of gaming, that I'm not interested in owning any of their products. The fact that they are not going to show off some new nun-chuck or belt buckle accessory that connects to their Wii U is fine with me. It'll clear up more floor space for DICE to show off Battlefield 4.

Who cares about Battlefield 4? Honestly 3 wasn't that great (yeah I'm jaded, sue me).

 

Honestly it was only a matter of time. Nintendo has be drowning in bad decisions for the last few years (I mean lets face it, the Wii U is a flop and I doubt it'll even bring in the number of sales they're hoping for this year). I still support Nintendo but only on the handheld market (I love my DS, sadly I don't get to play it that often anymore) and honestly that's what they should of been focusing on for the last few years instead of throwing money into the console market. Nintendo will feel this more then E3 since in the last few years other companies have been taking press conference time (like Ubisoft) so they'll just replace them with whatever company wants it more and has the money to throw at the E3 committee.

 

The last few years I've gotten used to watching E3 for the new game reveals and honestly that's what the conference should be about. I could care less about Microsoft's or Sony's sales figures for the year, what they plan to do on the social media front with their consoles, the new consoles, etc. I'm more interested in whats going on with games and the developers that make them (then again GDC is for the developer side of things anyway).

The BF3 campaign was not that good. The multiplayer was a lot of fun tho, mostly because I played the hell out of the game with my 2 brothers. Playing solo wasn't nearly as fun as me and my bros running in a squad on a three way phone call while killing the shit out of people. I think thats why I liked BF3 and why I'm looking forward to BF4. Squad play and team work is way better on that game than CoD Black Ops 2.

 

What I'm really looking forward to seeing at E3 this year is more info on Bungie's Destiny game, more next gen games and potential Steam box computers. Square Enix is supposed to show off their new Final Fantasy games, but I have no interest in their MMOs so I hope a new single player RPG besides the FFX remakes will be shown.

I really liked BF3... I thought it was a great game, and its DLC format was worth the money I paid for it IMO. It gave a LOT of content and not just maps. The Assignments were fun to complete. The solo campaign was terrible, and It shouldn't even have been included. BF has never been a campaign game... But I will give props to Bad Company 2... it's campaign was pretty good... that being said the BF4 campaign looks pretty intense.

 

Nintendo has become pretty irrelevant in the console market. They've failed to keep up with western gaming. I think this big companies like Sony and MS like to have their own conference that solely focuses on their own products. Instead of competing on the same show floor, they can have all of their clientele's attention and let developers compete for attention under their banner. E3 use to be the have all be all event of the year for video games... but after the industry became huge, and other events like PAX and TGS emerged it seems to have put some tarnish on E3's glamor. A few years ago when they decided to downsize I knew that E3 would slowly die away into obscurity. I remember the last few E3's not being that impressive... I dunno maybe its because its been one of the longest gaps between generations.

I barely remember much from the previous E3s except for a god of war trailer from the other year. Its hard to believe a game like Bioshock Infinite was shown off at E3 2011 and I didn't even know the game existed until about 6 months ago. Then again, I didn't follow video games as much back in 2011.

E3 isn't nearly as big and exclusive as it used to be.

 

If anything tho, I think Nintendo not having a large conference at E3 does hurt its company more than it hurting E3. Nintendo is a large publisher of its own games. E3, just like all the other game shows is great for getting more publicity. Even with social media, Nintendo Direct and independent conferences, I think Nintendo is only shooting itself in the foot by not taking advantage of every possible public event. Even if they are not showing off new hardware, I'd have been more interested if they did a large showing of new games and software, considering they are a large publisher themselves.

 

Nintendo recently set their Miiverse as a complete social network that can be accessed outside of their own console. With that, they could potentially setup facebook styled apis and start getting everyone's individual Miss displayed all over the internet:

You'd think something like that and the potential cross platform (game console / browser / phone apps) would be an interesting subject for a conference and what developers could accomplish with their network's new possibilities.

To a certain extent I think Nintendo should (have) entered into the smart phone market like Apple did.

 

Nintendo also needs to get out of the console market. Had they done that instead creating the Wii U & if the next gen PS4 & 3rd Xbox fail it could've made look like they knew what they were doing. Instead of looking like they'd do any gimmick for the sake of being relevant.

That makes sense. While I blame Nintendo for not taking the initiative for promoting their own goods, the target audience attending isn't even interested in their product.. so I suppose it does make sense for them not to step into the spotlight.

 

It still a shame tho. Nintendo used to be a primary competitor. And now they can't even get people to understand what their primary product is:
