Kinect + Pufferfish display = Eye of Sauron

Recommended Posts

http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/18/kinect-meets-a-pufferfish-display-produces-wonderfully-creepy-a

As Kinect hacks go, this one's not going to bowl you over with its technical complexity, but the effect of what it does is quite dramatic. One of Microsoft's sensor-rich, camera-laden Xbox accessories has been repurposed to communicate with a Pufferfish spherical projection display -- via the magic of WPF and openni -- with its motion tracking algorithms serving to control the image on the giant ball. Naturally, the first thing the tweakers behind this mod thought up was a Tolkien-inspired eye that follows people around the room. Sadly, the single Kinect box isn't enough to provide 360-degree coverage, but it's probably just a matter of time until they splice an array of them together and creep us out completely. Video after the break.

Update: You asked for the eye of Sauron and now you've got it. Second video added after the break.

"That fairy needs to stop shouting in my ear, or I'm going to throw her friend I have trapped in the bottle into a lava pit or something. HEY, LISTEN! No, YOU listen. If something's important, just say so without yelling at me. Or fly over to it and change color like you usually do. Just because I'm busy mowing the lawn and hoping I'll find some spare change, doesn't mean I can't hear you." - Link

The son of Tolkien has finally retired at the age of 93. As far as I know he hated the movies and would never sign off on any movie or tv deals and couldn't do anything to stop pre-existing deals that were made prior to him holding the estate. Now that he's retired Amazon already struck a deal with the Tolkien estate to make a new Lord of the rings series for Amazon prime. At first I thought it was a prequel series but now it sounds like a reboot of Lord of the rings entirely which sounds dumb when there are so many other ways they could have made a series that takes place in the world that was created. Maybe we'll get a Silmarillion movie in the near future. Or maybe a Tom Bombadil cartoon on cartoon network.

I'm glad they removed Kinect. But I'd gladly get the One with Kinect if it came with a Kinectimals sequel. Especially if that Kinectimals sequel allowed me to play with 2 cats at once. It's one thing to have a Cheetah named Ophelia. But it would be a bit more Metal to have a Cheetah named Ophelia & a Black Panther named Lita out at the same time.

In this trailer we get to see more Legolas and Smaug. I'm looking forward to this movie as long as there are no more Dwarf dish throwing and singing scenes.
