Board Game Movies Hurting Universal?

7 posts in this topic

Universal’s deal to make movies based on Hasbro game brands (see “Universal Pacts with Hasbro”) is called “punishing” by New York Magazine’s Vulture blog, which also asks whether it might cost Universal president and COO Ron Meyer his job.

The problem for Universal, according to the report, is that if Universal doesn’t make the Hasbro movies within a relatively short period of time, it not only loses the rights but also has to pay multimillion dollar kill fees. And the value of the deal, at least as it’s being executed by Universal, is being questioned, because the Hasbro properties that are being made into movies have very little underlying narrative.

The budgets are also going to be killer; Battleship alone is going to cost $200 million (see “Universal Bets the Farm on Battleship”).

Vulture found much to amuse in Universal’s efforts to get Hasbro to allow it to delay the release of Battleship so it wouldn’t get stepped on by Transformers 3. “Let’s stop for a moment to really underline the moviemaking times we are living in: Hollywood studio heads were begging a Rhode island toy company for more time so they could spend $200 million on a state of the art CGI film based on an early twentieth-centry board game,” it said.”

We wonder why Universal doesn’t look at some of the brands over at Wizards of the Coast. Magic: the Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons both have well-developed fantasy settings and tons of associated fiction; there’s no shortage of backstory. And both have high brand awareness with the age groups that attend movies.

After millions of dollars are spent and multiple "screwed if you make the movie, super screwed if you don't" contracts are signed, they are just now starting to realize that making board games into movies isn't the smartest idea?

:robot:

The only thing worse than a board game movie is a movie parody based on board game movies named "Board Game Movie"...

I wouldn't be surprised if a spoof movie called "Board game movie" gets made just to make fun of all the hasbro movies. Like "Not another teen movie" or the "Scary Movie" series. :P

I have noticed the selection isn't nearly what it used to be. Back in the day I'd search for a movie and 80% of the time it was on netflix. Now I don't even use the search feature because the last 20 movies I've searched for are never on there. Netflix used to be this great replacement to blockbuster with every movie made available, but now it looks like all the content rights holders and networks are pulling their properties off and either selling the rights to other streaming services like Amazon Prime or Hulu or they're making their own streaming service like CBS all access. I'm tempted to cut my cable and switch to streaming only services but I still haven't found a combo of apps or services that will give me the channel selection or content I fully want. I already have amazon prime and netflix. But to replace cable I figure if I go with Sling blue with HBO and starz, hulu, hbo go (part of my cable package now), and over the air HD antenna I'd have the majority of the channels I watch with cable except for science channel. I'd probably save about $30 a month over my current cable plan. Anyone use Sling?
Also, with the companies pulling their content from netflix and making their own streaming services, maybe in the near future cable will actually be a good deal again compared to being nickel and dimed by all the different apps? I do like seeing different streaming services offering competition like Sling and PlayStation VUE, but I still feel on the fence about actually cutting off my cable for streaming only.

If Nintendo had Pixar make their movies while maintaining control of the property so another "Super Mario Bros." live action fiasco never happens again, they could make some really awesome movies. But if Nintendo teams up with some companies in Japan that did the live action death note or attack on titan movies, this could lead to some huge flops.

Anyone watching Heroes of Cosplay? Aside from Yaya Han, everyone looks like normal people that enjoy doing cosplay. Its interesting to see their costumes and their design concepts and ideas. The woman's Brave cosplay was really good. She looked pretty much just like Merida.
