Kong: Skull Island Trailer

5 posts in this topic

The last King Kong movie was good but a bit unrealistic with how so many people survived the island. This looks like a good reboot. Kong is the defender of the island... versus Destroyers? If we can get the dragon Primordus to make an appearance at the end it'll be awesome. XD

Trahearne will guide the cast to victory and take all the credit. The second movie will bomb because it's a 2 hour meta chain event. XD

For a moment I thought this would be a sequel to 10 Cloverfield Lane because John Goodman was in it. Which is also why they had to show the giant monsters.

This was on HBO Go finally, so I watched it.

What was good:

The music was outstanding since it's set at the end of Vietnam. The action is decent, especially the finale rumble. The cast was good, and overall the acting was great with what they had to work with. The female lead wasn't the damsel in distress being carried by Kong the entire flick, although they managed a tasteful call back at some point in the film.

What was bad:

For a PG-13 film, they really didn't push the boundaries. Not that they should have, but there are a few adult themed settings that are watered down to PG levels. It just felt bizarre and awkward. The story was  super cliche to where you want to roll your eyes at some parts. "Lets go find this former military badass wilderness tracker in a shady Asian brothel/club where he beats down two guys with a pool stick right when we walk in, and then demands 5x the money offered for a job he knows nothing about". The CG was extremely dated... I'm talking about the first Jurassic Park film kind of dated. I feel a part of that is that the movie was made for 3D first with a bunch of cliche cheap screen pops to make the audience jump, and the obligatory throw something at the screen in slow motion. After looking it up, I understand why the other creatures looked the way they did. They were inspired by Miyazaki films. Most of it was cool, but the main opposition looks like something I've seen before that I can't recall, mixed with the smiling creatures that are in the shitty 1997 Evangelion movie.

Final Conclusion:

It wasn't terrible, it could have been better with modern CG not tailored for 3D. It sure as hell didn't convince me that King Kong was on Godzilla's level. The MUTOs were way more imposing, and Godzilla was way more menacing. In a head to head match Godzilla would win by sneezing. If they swapped places, Godzilla would have easily destroyed the creatures of Skull Island, I'm not too sure King Kong could have defeated even a single MUTO... much less be of any help vs. King Ghidorah in the future.  In the squad of Godzilla, Mothra, and Rodan, King Kong is like Bruce Wayne without money. XD Big G might need to call up Jet Jaguar for this one.

It was an enjoyable movie. A bit too predictable at times but the cast felt great and the soundtrack was spot on. My biggest pet peeve for this is the landscape. The crazy guy said that Kong was the last of his clan of giant apes and that he was still small and growing. Thats what gets me... There is no way in hell that island could support an entire population of giant apes. Kong looked completely out of place on that island. All the small normal sized trees, giant open landscapes. Kong just walking around anywhere there could easily see for miles and miles. Aside from him eating a tentacle water monster thing, and us getting to see a random giant water buffalo there is no real food chain there to be seen, yet alone one capable of supporting potentially hundreds of giant apes. That other King Kong movie with the dinosaurs, giant insects, giant trees, massive cliffsides, huge landscapes, etc. was more plausible to me.

The Disney princess part at the end is great. I loved the first movie.

Looks like aliens are terraforming the planet and making monsters at the same time, which is a combination of awesome to me.
Now for a brief rant.. The tv commercials were better than this trailer. In the commercials it looks like she is the pro going in to figure out wtf is going on, but in the trailer she's only going in to save her husband because Hollywood still doesn't think a female character can actually have professional motivation to do shit on their own without attaching a man to the woman's goals.

I'm glad Wasp will finally get some screen time, Marvel needs more strong females in their movies.

It looks promising and a couple of the scenes look like they were taken right out of the game. Alicia Vikander looks like Lara Croft in that outfit, but shes a very small woman (height and muscle) in comparison to Lara Croft in the video game. I hope her physical performance is believable considering how many men she'll have to kill. To hell with the double guns tho. I'd rather see her using only the bow and climbing axe the entire movie.. and maybe an assault rifle. lol.
