The Sci Fi Channel has announced that it will air a two-hour Battlestar Galactica prequel movie in 2009 following the conclusion of the final 10 episodes of the fourth and last season of the critically-acclaimed science fiction series. The as-yet-unnamed prequel will be directed by Edward James Olmos (Admiral Adama), will focus on the Cylons, and will be set before the events in the original BSG miniseries.

Jane Espenson is writing the prequel, which will be shot over the next few months in Vancouver. The new project focuses on two powerful Cylon agents, who are attempting to deal with the unexpected survival of humans in the chaotic aftermath of nuclear destruction. One dwells among humans on the ships that got away and the other with the resistance fighters who were left behind. Universal, which is producing the two-hour movie, plans to release it on DVD after it airs on the Sci Fi Channel.

This still unnamed prequel is not to be confused with Caprica, an earlier announced BSG prequel (and potential “backdoor pilot”), which will take place more than 50 years prior to the events in the main series and will chronicle the Adama and Greystone families and the development of the sentient robots (see “BSG Prequel Greenlit”).

All sorts of BSG merchandise is available including comics and graphic novel collections from Dynamite, the RPG from Margaret Weis, BSG action figures and Minimates, and an upcoming board game from Fantasy Flight. Tokyopop recently announced a Battlestar Galactica: Echoes of New Caprica manga that will be released in March of 2009 (see “Battlestar Galactica Manga”).

This sounds interesting, because it should have some action in it.
