The guy that I brought my balls to for drilling told me 16lbs was really too heavy for anyone and suggested I go down to 15lbs. It actually made a world of difference. I have a spare ball which at the time I had no idea existed... I was wrecking my wrist trying a reverse curve when the 10 pin was left. Now when I bowl my whole arm gets sore and it feels like I ran my thumb through a power sander the next day x_X.

If I ever get back into bowling, I might buy a 12 pounder. Anything over that seemed to make my wrist give out. But the finger and thumb placement is usually horrible for how I bowl unless its a custom fitted ball. In the mean time, I use 8 pound balls and I never use the thumb hole. I use the fingers, palm the rest of it and I curve the hell out of it. Sore thumbs suck with bowling. Have you tried a thumb insert? You'd have to get the hole drilled bigger for it to fit.
