Arctic Sea Ice Melting Faster Than Expected

By Brandon Keim icon_email.gifSeptember 06, 2007 | 11:11:56 AMCategories: Climate

icehole.jpg By the time little Suri Cruise is old enough to have thrown her life away in a haze of ill-advised B-list celebrity marriages, scientists say the Arctic will be free of ice.

(Okay, scientists didn't say that first bit. I'm trying to be more accessible here. Blame Jezebel.)

The latest findings show that Arctic ice is melting even faster than expected. As the Guardian reported,

Mark Serreze, an Arctic specialist at the US National Snow and Ice Data Centre at Colorado University in Denver which released the figures, said: "It's amazing. It's simply fallen off a cliff and we're still losing ice." The Arctic has now lost about a third of its ice since satellite measurements began 30 years ago, and the rate of loss has accelerated sharply since 2002.

Dr Serreze said: "If you asked me a couple of years ago when the Arctic could lose all of its ice, then I would have said 2100, or 2070 maybe. But now I think that 2030 is a reasonable estimate.

A a full ocean-to-ocean passage can now be made through the waters above Canada, and countries are jockeying for ownership of undersea oil and gas reserves. Seeing as how their claims revolve around such flimasy cases as "showing that a chain of underwater mountains that runs across the region are connected to their respective continental shelves," here's an idea: how about assigning ownership of those reserves to all of humanity, and kicking back the proceeds to green energy research, subsidies for food prices sent soaring by climate change, and fighting new diseases in freshly tropical places? And then shake out some leftovers for people who've been left homeless by rising seas, and local Inuit whose lifestyles are being radically changed and are stuck giving guided tours to hunters.

Ice-free Arctic could be here in 23 years [The Guardian]

Ice Free Arctic is impossible. Too much freshwater would pour into the tropic conveyor belt and prevent warm water from reaching the norther hemisphere. If anything there would be more ice in the Arctic by 2030. The cap can only melt so much, but it does melt. You could possibly see a repeat of the 1840's or even worse. I like how some scientists try to defy history.

People are getting funded to study this, and even if they found out that they were wrong, its not like they would go back and denounce their life's work. This is where we run into a serious problem.

To make matters even worse, all of this bogus hoopla about the second coming of the great flood is going to have people preparing for the wrong thing, making another historical climate change a bigger catastrophe on the population that it should be.

The earth cycles from hot to cold naturally, the last great ice age is believed to be the third one in earth's history. Before that period when the dinosaurs were in their prime, the average temperature of the earth was 103 F. Whether we help this process along by burning fuel... Its possible, but not as much as it is dramatized. I do know that the Tyrannosaurus Rex didn't drive a Chevy Suburban.

In closing, I personally believe conservation of our forests (as far as leaving the trees that inhabit them) is a more important issue. The only issue fossil fuel presents in my mind is what happens when we run out? The earth will do what it pleases, Man is not mighty enough to stop it.

Are we performing the same analysis around the world, even at the equator? Where did that ice come from?

look at the links I sent you and poke around this forum. Its all here

and yes I wholeheartedly agree making food fuel is probably the worst idea in a long history of bad ideas.

ethanol seems to be a decent next stepping stone. they're talking willow tree farms up here.

Too much freshwater would pour into the tropic conveyor belt and prevent warm water from reaching the norther hemisphere.

Land ice would have to melt too and empty into the ocean for that to happen or more sea ice melting in the antarctic

Dx! Join up with an online activist group. The email campaigns do make a difference :D

Glacial ice from Greenland with a little help provided from ice floating around in the northern sectors of the atlantic, caused the climate to go haywire from 1680-1850 :P

I'm not disputing global warming. I just dispute its actual cause and effect. As far as actvisits groups go, I don't have time for that. Maybe after I graduate and win the lottery. X'D

I'm on a number of different mailing lists, I'm a nosey bitch and I like to complaine X'D I think I get more email from Hillary Clinton (her office and her campigne) then I do from my own family.

ps

if we have another ice age reguardless of how mini my home is fucked. every blade of grass I mow and flower or tree I tend is dead, gone, buried under the ice. I've lived here all my life, what the glaciers made. to think of it all being scrubbed away by ice is really frigin depressing -_-;

I still would have proffered Lousy O or however his last name was actually spelt. Her andGiuliani would make terrible presidents. The only candidate that offers real change so far is Ron Paul.

As for the ice caps, yeah it sucks that they're melting. I'm still at times PO'ed about the guys Who Killed The Electric Car. At least that would have helped slow down the ice caps melting.

Not all electricity comes from fossil fuels. Windmills, dams, solar energy have been getting better. Guilt trips are always the worst way to try & resolve a problem. Guys like Nader do damage business more than help it. There are also some screwed up politicians that make matters worse.

I'm all for good business, but if someone has a problem with a business then they should actually prove they could do better. Not spread bad media or bad laws.

:nono: No gills for me, thanks, I have enough breathing problems with asthma to worry about breathing water as well. Now webbed feet might be interesting. ;)

Understand this lad, fate is a fickle lady. Work with the hand you're dealt and you may just be able to run your flag up the pole. Don't, and well, you may just find your mast cut down.

On a brighter note: an ice free arctic would be good for the Canadian economy by opening a new trade route with Russia.

One man's disaster is another man's opportunity.

It would also lead to lesser land as water would rise.

It's not so much the trade route that's become a hot issue. It's the oil that's supposed to be there.

I find Russia's argument that a chain of undersea mountain in order to expand it's territory to include the north pole is laughable. It shouldn't even be disputable. Canada has this lovely chain of islands that puts us there. I mean using Russia's logic Canada could claim that the artic is connected to Canadian soil via an previously undiscovered undersea platau. (A.K.A The ocean floor)

I hope they don't realise that Russia is connected to the Earth or they're going to want to claim the rest of the planet. /sarcasm
