The sequel to Avatar is set to open seven years after its original planned release date in 2013, and the franchise has found its new lead character.

Cliff Curtis, best known for his work as Travis Manawa in AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead, has signed on in the lead role for all four Avatar sequels, according to a report from Deadline. Curtis will star alongside returning actors Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and Sigourney Weaver.

Although the sequel is still three years away, Curtis’ casting announcement does come with a little more information about what to expect. The actor will be playing the leader of the Metkayina people, a civilization that lives under the sea. Director James Cameron has said in the past that a large part of the sequel will take place under water.

Another tidbit of information that we can take from this announcement is that Curtis won’t compete with Worthington for the top dog spot. Instead, the two will split their time on screen as leaders of two completely different tribes.

..

Avatar 2 will now be released on Dec. 18, 2020. Avatar 5, the final installment in the franchise, will open on Dec. 19, 2025.

I was under the impression that these movies have been getting filmed for about 3-4 years already.. and they'd start releasing a new Avatar movie once a year. But they're still casting roles!? Wow. At this rate I won't even expect Avatar 2 to come out in 2020. Also, I haven't seen this actor in much besides Fear the Walking Dead. While hes probably the best actor in that show (thats not saying much honestly), I don't see him doing well as a lead in a major movie franchise like this.

I doubt that Avatar needed any sequels.

I can imagine them being set in the same universe.

But I just don't see how Pandora can continue being a place of interest.

Those who fight deplorables should see to it that they themselves do not become deplorables.

I don't understand how future sequels would connect with the "Avatar" name. Unless humans are coming back to wage more war against the Navi using "avatars", there are no more avatars on the planet/moon. Since whatshisface transferred himself into his avatar, its now him and no longer considered an avatar. If its a movie about a bunch of blue aliens communing with nature with a bunch of fancy 3D IMAX effects, I don't think it would be nearly as popular as the original film.

It was a fun movie, they didn't stay true to the games at all with most of the plot coming from the fourth game but overall it was good special effects and kept a good pace with plenty of action. Although it did feel toned down with gun fights considering the amount of shooting takes place in the games. I'm guessing they did that to keep the rating family friendly. Tom Holland still looked way too young for the role imo.

Very interesting. Spider-man, Doctor Strange and the multiverse. This should be a fun movie.

I wasn't that interested in this movie because its based in the past, but now that I've been sucked into Battlefield 1, this movie looks amazing. I know DICE likes to put easter eggs in their games so I wonder if we'll see an amazon warrior reference somewhere in a future dlc. On a side note, I thought we had a Wonder Woman topic already for the teaser trailer, but I didn't see one.

Awesome movie. I watched it a couple days ago. One of the best movies of 2020 for me. Very fun, energetic, great CGI and the monsters were all pretty damn cool and unique.

The Disney princess part at the end is great. I loved the first movie.
