Playstation 4 Standby Mode = SD Netflix for other devices

Recommended Posts

Over the past week Netflix has been struggling to give me half assed quality on my PS3. I thought it was a netflix issue. I checked my speedtest.net and everything seems fine. I changed my settings in Netflix to max data streaming.. I tried netflix on my laptop.. same thing.. SD. I could not get netflix to stream HD. Then I remembered I left the PS4 in standby mode last saturday so it could finish downloading that "Don't Starve" game. I turned on the PS4, it found a new update for BF4.. and now I guess I need to check my standby mode settings because I thought the PS4 would have downloaded that in the background already in standby. Anyway, I turned the PS4 completely off and checked my laptop again.. Netflix now streams in HD again. wtf. Maybe the PS4 is downloading in small increments while in standby? Maybe its communicating over my WIFI in a way that it is interfering with the packets over my WIFI? I do not know. All I do know is that if my PS4 is in standby, my Netflix over wifi looses all HD.

Interesting... PS4 standby has never given me issues... I stream on my PC as well when I don't feel like draining my Turtles battery life... When Steam downloads a game it will lag out YouTube and Netflix sometimes while not affecting normal Web browsing.

I'm still testing this theory, but I noticeably had better netflix quality with my PS4 completely off. I think its because my PS4 is connected via WIFI and whatever the hell it's doing over the WIFI while in standby is screwing up my netflix quality. Its odd. I have my PS4 in a bedroom but my PS3 is still my primary Netflix / blu ray player for my living room or I would just use the PS4.

Maybe its all those portforwards I have on my router.. I'll have to test some more. I changed my channel from auto to 11 to see if I'd get a better signal.. apparently I am because my speedtest is maxing out at 34 mbps now with a minimum of 28 mbps continuously.

I forgot to update this topic after I figured it all out..

After more testing it does appear that it was a router issue. The PS4 in standby mode did seem to cause some issue with my router. Probably because it is on the 802.11n connection and the ps3 is 802.11g. My router has the G & N (combo) and N (by itself) signals on two different bands, 2.4GHz and 5GHz, I believe the 2.4GHz band was getting too much interference from the numerous other devices in my house (laptops, phones and the PS4). Once I set the 2.4GHz (802.11g) band to channel 11, it stopped a lot of the interference issues. Now everything can play netflix in full HD with no problems. If I get any more issues, I'll set the lower band to be G only which will force all the N devices to connect at the higher band. As it is now, the N devices will connect to whatever signal is the strongest, so I don't want to force specific connections if I don't have to.

The router had that 2.4GHz set for "auto" before.. why it decided to connect to a channel with a crappy connection makes no sense, seeing as 11 is in the range for auto. But manually setting it for 11 worked great. So if anyone has a netflix issue over wifi.. set that to channel 11.

      https://blog.playstation.com/2022/03/29/all-new-playstation-plus-launches-in-june-with-700-games-and-more-value-than-ever/
PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now are merging into the new PlayStation Plus and the membership will now become a tiered system:

I'll be sticking with PlayStation Plus Essential assuming I can still buy yearly memberships on sale for around $30-$40 like I've been doing since before the PS4 launched. I'm barely getting any use out of PS+ as it is with the games they've been offering for the last year so if I have to start paying a monthly fee I'll just cancel it instead.
In comparison to the PS+ Extra, I've recently used Xbox PC game pass which I got a 3 month trial for $1 on black friday weekend last year. I don't have an Xbox so I was only using the lowest tier of the PC version which I suppose is the Microsoft Xbox PC version of PlayStation Plus Extra. It is an ok service but with the amount of time I have to dedicate to gaming I was only able to play and beat 2 games in those 3 months. I'm glad the xbox pc game pass came with EA Access since I was able to play and beat Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. EA Access itself didn't appeal to me because on the PC game pass its basically 70% sports titles. I was also able to play and beat Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus and that game wasn't nearly as good as the first. Both games retail for around $14 and $7 when on sale so I saved roughly $20 with my $1 free trial. But if it was to pay $10 a month for the service I would have been in the hole $9 compared to if I bought those 2 games instead. For me and my available time to play games a subscription service is not a savings to me. Theres alot of people that could benefit from a game subscription service and I'm glad its an option for them.
I will say tho, for people that have an Xbox console and a game subscription service is beneficial to them, the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate has console and pc game pass combined along with xbox games with gold free monthly games, and that is a far better deal that PlayStation Plus Deluxe for the same price of $14.99 a month. The Xbox Game Pass Ultimate also includes console and pc games that can be played from the cloud too kind of like Nvidia's GeForce Now streaming.

Season 3 started and its 5 episodes in so far. This has become one of my favorite Star Trek series. I would have never imagined myself saying that during the horrible season 1, but season 2 was amazing and season 3 is awesome so far. I highly recommend this show. I did not think the show could get better than season 2, considering captain Pike and Spock were top notch, but its maintaining that same quality easily. Talking about season 3 is a huge spoiler if you haven't seen season 2. Regardless of that I will say "The Burn", the event that completely changed the entirety of star trek, all species, all great powers in the galaxy, etc. is an extremely interesting plot. Well done for the writers because this has me hooked all over again. It makes the show completely unpredictable in terms of where that plot is going and I have no idea what they will reveal next. CBS is working on more Star Trek series and for the first time I can say hell yes. They're reviving one of my all time favorite scifi shows back into the glory days of having new series coming out and they're all high quality.

I've gotten annoyed with managing my digital movie and tv series collection. It didn't bother me before because Netflix had pretty much everything. I'd never have to search for stuff on my hard drives or old dvd-rs because it would all be on Netflix. Now that Netflix has dropped about 50% of their content over the last couple years and will lose significantly more once all of Disney's properties are removed next year I've realized all my old dvds, blu rays and digital movies are all getting more use again. This is were plex comes in.
I setup plex on my main pc, moved a bunch of movies and tv series into some folders and set plex to use those folders. This program auto grabbed all meta data for the content, images, etc and is basically a Netflix clone. I was shocked by how efficient this is. I installed the plex client app on my ps3, ps4 and roku stick and as long as my pc with the plex server is running I can now stream all my content to every tv in the house. It even keeps track of where i left off in a movie and i can resume it on a different device if I want.
So I bought a 4tb hard drive yesterday and I'm going all in on this. I'm going to rip a bunch of my dvds and blu rays (the ones that don't have a digital copy) into mkv files and throw them on that hard drive for my plex. I'll try putting my old anime avi files (with hard coded subs from back in the old download days) in there to to see if plex can play those too.  Plex will even organise by genre to so it all works good. And plex is free.
I was thinking about buying a nvidia shield because it can be used as a plex media server instead of just a client like the PlayStation/roku apps but it looks like it has some limitations with file types and my old anime files would definitely not play on it unless i converted every file thru some program called handbrake. I'll look into that some more.
I figured I'd share this in case anyone else was getting annoyed with Netflix and every company making their own Netflix clones. Instead of paying every company a piece of the pie it'll be cheaper in the long run to just make my own Netflix with the content i already own that is already tailored to my preferances. And plex can stream outside of your home in 720p if you go on a road trip. I doubt I'll ever use that feature tho, especially with upload rates being shit with spectrum.
Go to https://www.plex.tv to get the media server and the PlayStation/xbox store/roku/android to download the plex app. I know this topic seems like am advertisement but they're paying me nothing and it's all free downloads anyway. it just works and works great.
