AMC Announces Plans for a The Walking Dead Companion Series

AMC announced today that the network is in the initial stages of developing a companion series to its original drama series The Walking Dead, which premiered on AMC in October of 2010. The Walking Dead is currently the #1 show on television among adults 18-49. Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd and David Alpert are on board as executive producers, with AMC Studios set to produce. The companion series has a target on-air date of 2015.

“Building on the success of the most popular show on television for adults 18-49 is literally a no-brainer,” said Charlie Collier, AMC’s president and general manager. “We look forward to working with Robert, Gale and Dave again as we develop an entirely new story and cast of characters. It’s a big world and we can’t wait to give fans another unforgettable view of the zombie apocalypse.”

“After 10 years of writing the comic book series and being so close to the debut of our fourth, and in my opinion, best season of the TV series, I couldn’t be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of The Walking Dead universe,” said Kirkman. “The opportunity to make a show that isn’t tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing.”

A brand new series based in the same zombie apocalypse. It looks like TWD might be franchising like Star Trek did. Numerous series can be a good way to fill the time between seasons as long as they are scheduled to air in different times of the year.

I'm kinda against this. I'd be for it if this series was already done. I just hope it doesn't put a strain on continuity/canon, or the creative teams. I can see them being on the west cost, to avoid any run ins or nonsensical cameos. But I can also see the series ending with the two groups meeting.

That could be a strong possibility. In terms of creativity, they could make the Walking Dead telltale game into a standalone series. It takes place in the same universe and is completely separate from the plot of the existing series.

I just checked and there are currently almost 3500 fanfics on fanfiction.net alone. They could swipe plot lines off of so many stories. lol. Of course half of those fictions are probably made by 12 year old girls that like yaoi. -_-;

Telltale's award-winning episodic point-and-click game, The Walking Dead, is "true to every spirit and tenant" of the series, according to AMC's The Walking Dead executive producer David Alpert.

Speaking as part of a 10-year anniversary documentary, Alpert said that the game is "an example" of what his team hopes to do with the TV show. Telltale Games screenwriter and story consultant Gary Whitta called the episodic title "a story experience first and a game experience second."

"The experience feels less like a game and more like an interactive television series," Whitta said. "That's a new kind of art form."

Looks like the video game might be an influence to the new series thats in the works. I doubt it'll be based on the game, but I wouldn't be surprised if they use some of the scenarios from it.

      Ok, so we're 1 episode away from the finale. That will be released tomorrow. The first two episodes were basically Dick van dyke and I dream of Jeanie episodes. Very boring and made no sense. Third episode and the "tv reality" becomes colorized and things start to progress. Fourth episode gets better and 5th episodes and on the show is solid and extremely interesting and is true Marvel movie quality. By the 8th ep all the tv show stuff at the beginning of the series makes complete sense and the series is awesome. I'm expecting some huge battle for this finale and probably some giant reveal for the Doctor Strange 2 movie. Maybe we'll see some huge actor like Keanu Reeves show up as Mephisto or something like how we got that hint of Thanos at the end of the Avengers movie.

      The season finale just ended this past monday. I started this series and gave it a couple eps. I almost dropped it, but by the third ep shit started going down and I got sucked into the plot. This was a surprisingly great series with excellent acting. Its so refreshing to see a 1 off series like this. I don't think there is going to be a season 2 and if there is it would probably ruin the experience. This played out like an anime in a sense. It started and finished the entire plot. There was no filler episodes and everything tied in together. I hope this inspires AMC to make more stand alone short series. Hell, I wish more of america tv would follow this direction instead of endless reality shows or drawing out a series so long that it gets canceled without a finale. This show proves its possible for US tv to actually give us a story in a complete season. Well done AMC.  I can only compare this to Stephen King mini series, except better. Now I wish all those old Stephen King mini series were actually given the full season treatment like this.

      This is without a doubt the best thing I have seen on tv this entire year. 4 series in a massive justice league / captain America civil war style plot spanning 4 episodes and it was amazing. I really hope they make another crossover special next year. Superheroes versus the ultimate Nazis. The episodes are online if anyone wants to watch:

      I loved this cartoon when i was a kid. The animation looks good, the music is great, the voice actors are a good match. I'll watch this.
