All Xbox One Games Might Require A Constant Internet Connection

Recommended Posts

The Xbox One could very well be more powerful than the Playstation 4 thanks to cloud computing. Official Xbox Magazine is reporting that for every Xbox One sold by Microsoft, there will be the equivalent of three additional console's CPU and storage available to each system by means of a constant internet connection to MS's cloud servers.

Of course this means if a game developer wants to take advantage of the Xbox One's powerful cloud servers, a constant internet connection will be required. This would mean that any or even all games made for the system could possibly require a constant internet connection..

According to Jeff Henshaw, group program manager of Xbox Incubation & Prototyping, the cloud's muscle means that your Xbox One isn't, effectively, an Xbox One, but an Xbox Three. See what I did there, etc.

"We're provisioning for developers for every physical Xbox One we build, we're provisioning the CPU and storage equivalent of three Xbox Ones on the cloud," he said. "We're doing that flat out so that any game developer can assume that there's roughly three times the resources immediately available to their game, so they can build bigger, persistent levels that are more inclusive for players. They can do that out of the gate."

"It's also been stated that the Xbox One is ten times more powerful than the Xbox 360, so we're effectively 40 times greater than the Xbox 360 in terms of processing capabilities [using the cloud]. If you look to the cloud as something that is no doubt going to evolve and grow over time, it really spells out that there's no limit to where the processing power of Xbox One can go.

But why didn't Microsoft mention this potential during their Xbox One reveal event?

This also raises more questions.. Could it be that Sony's Gaikai tech is even more powerful? Will the Xbox One still match up with Playstation 4 if Sony reveals computing potential with their cloud servers?

Sony has said that constant online connections are not required, does this mean all game developers are planning on utilizing the PS4's specs only and not the potential cloud specs?

Will this mean all future console games will come with a label indicating if a constant cloud connection is required or not? We'll have to wait for E3 to get all the details.

In the mean time, check out this video of Crysis 2 being played on a web browser thanks to Sony's Gaikai system:

If cloud computing ever grabbed my interest I would've gotten Onlive. PS4 needing Gaikai on your console seems like a bad idea though if Gaikai granted me access to PS3 games that couldn't work on PS4 I could see that as the only bright side to cloud computing. But beyond that I expect PS4 Games to work on the PS4 without ever needing an Internet connection.

Sony is probably going to make it at the developers discretion... which would mean that most of next gen games will require an online connection... its console DRM. MS isn't the only one that hates Gamestop... As many times as I've said it. I think we'll be seeing Steam like structuring on consoles. People that bitch about used games are more about those they barrow from friends.... because if you're really upset you can't go buy a used game at gamestop, you need a reality check... unless the game is over 2 years old, its not going to be much cheaper than a brand new copy... Gamestop will give you $5-12 and turn around and sell it for $30-40. I laugh when they've asked me if I'd rather save $5 and get a used copy... I might as well pay all $50.

Yep, I usually pay the extra $5. I don't have their membership card so I'm not saving anything extra with buying used. I'd rather pay the extra $5 and know the condition of the disk is top quality.

PS4 will stream all the old PS3 games with Gaikai. From what I've read on multiple sites, no PS3 games will be downloadable or playable via backwards compatibility. Instead they'll be played on the gaikai cloud servers and streamed to the PS4 consoles. I'm hoping I won't have to increase my broadband connection for it tho. But because the games will be the PS3 versions, Sony should have no problem enabling all digitally purchased PS3 games on PSN to be played on the PS4. If they try to make everyone buy all the games all over again, I think that would be a dick move on their part.

That still makes me hopeful that there's still a possibility that PS Plus could come to PS4. Even if PS4 has PS World it would be bad to dump PS Plus benefits. Especially when they started adding free games last year & added PS Plus perks to PS Home this year.

And if they could then also cloud compute SR2, PS Home, DCUO, etc to PS Vitas they'll finally have me sold on buying that handheld.

Whats interesting tho, is the fact that they could technically run the existing PSN on the cloud and stream it completely to the PS4 while still using PS World as the new network. But like what DX was saying, they'll drop PSN for the new system. Considering PSN will still be in existence for years to come for existing PS3s, it makes sense to have the two networks separated for the two systems. Even tho PSN won't be on the PS4, all digital products should be accessible or at least transferable to new PS World accounts as far as I'm concerned. Nintendo did that with the Wii U, so I don't see why Sony won't do it for the PS4.

I already read that Xbox One will have no backwards compatibility with 360 games, physical or downloadable. Even tho the accounts will carry over, all digital games will not.

Every once in a while I'll come across free games for PC that look really good. Anyone can feel free to update this topic with limited time free game links so we can add them to our ever growing backlog of games. If a game states how long it will be free for, please list that along with the link. Sometimes it won't be stated so if you click a link and its no longer free, then that promo must have expired. I've seen alot of free game listings off slickdeals or other blogs. I'll update this when I see good ones. I would post the free games with Amazon Prime, but I don't currently have amazon prime so if those appeal to anyone, feel free to post them since Amazon Prime generally gives away a couple free games a month.
      To start off with:
Little Nightmares is currently free with a Steam promotion until 05/30/2021 @ 10:00am (does not say if EDT, PDT, etc. )

Company of Heroes 2, Company of Heroes 2 Ardennes Assault - Limited Free Promotional Package, free for this weekend or until 05/31/2021? It doesn't say exact day it ends.

Steam has made its own hand held game console. It can be used as a handheld or docked to a tv like the Nintendo Switch. Honestly, this looks like a solid hand held. Everyone that does PC gaming has a steam account and most likely alot of games already in their library.
There are three versions: $399, $529 & $649 depending on the internal storage. Its shipping December of 2021.

      The hardware looks great too:

The new PlayStation 4 firmware update will include external HHD support for game installation. Finally. I honestly didn't realize the original PS4s even had USB 3. They are also finally adding custom wallpapers via screenshots. About damn time. The wallpapers in the online store are complete garbage. I'd still prefer to use my own .jpg files like on the PS3, but modders used that feature as a way to hack the system which is why we never got the functionality in PS4. Using a screenshot is completely fine with me.

Nvidia is launching an online game streaming service called GeForce NOW.
I'm going to quote myself here from another topic:
With Playstation having it's own streaming service and now Nvidia making it's own service, having to own physical consoles and PCs specifically for gaming might come to an end within our lifetimes.
The downside to the Nvidia service is the cost. I've been seeing the numbers "$25 per 20 hours of gaming" floating around alot. If so, thats a hell of an expense for now.
