Death Threats Lead to 'South Park' Censorship

Recommended Posts

Comedy Central bleeped mentions of the Prophet Muhammad and covered images with a black box in this week’s episode of South Park, after the edgy 200th episode last week led to death threats against creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker. The censorship extended to Kyle’s final speech, in which he talked about the dangers of “intimidation and fear,” without referencing any religious topics.

Last week’s South Park episode featured a depiction of the Prophet Muhammad in a bear suit. RevolutionMuslim.com, a U.S. Website that has since been shut down, then warned Stone and Parker that they could share the fate of Theo Van Gogh, a Dutch filmmaker who was murdered by extremists in reaction to a film that was critical of the treatment of women in Islam. The site included a photo of Van Gogh’s corpse, and published the addresses of the show’s production office and a link to a story about a house owned by Parker and Stone.

Stone and Parker continued the gag in this week’s show, but Comedy Central apparently decided to pull the plug on any references to Islam, and even to the threat. Stone and Parker issued a statement, in which they said, “In the 14 years we’ve been doing South Park, we have never done a show that we couldn’t stand behind. We delivered our version of the show to Comedy Central, and they made a determination to alter the episode.”

I must have missed these two episodes... O_O I wonder how many threats comedy central received to force them to start censoring south park.

:hypnotise: But when you really think about it. The retarded superstition has been around for quite some time, and has had plenty of opportunity to dumb down the populace and feed the fire of fear in the hearts of many. Unfortunately it's going to take some time for us to get past all this.

It's a bit complicated ... they first showed it on the FGuy episode, then SPark made fun of it, and were gonna show him in an episode but had to censor by a big black cube at the last minute. This was like 2-3 years ago. Now, on the 200th episode, they were gonna show him in a bear costume and there was speculation that they wouldn't censor him this time. But, eventually they did. It's all in link with the Super Heroes or Super Friends arc, and a lot of cool cameos happened 2 nights back. But yeah, that's a small gist. According to the Quran/ Koran, there is to be no depiction of their prophet/ god in books, or anything. He is not to be shown, period. That's where there is a conflict because the makers of SPark said it didn't matter because of the 1st Amendment, freedom of speech, and here they were being told/ asked to shelve the episode completely.

SPs uncensored depiction of Prophet Mohammed has been already floating around in youtube for ages. Not one death threats to them or anyone for this. This is just another same public stunt over and over again to boost ratings. There are billions of Muslims out there but one wacko kills a guy..yea. They would be dead by now if those threats were that serious.

I think it's because of the uproar 2 years or so ago when they had a cartoon of the prophet, and since then, that whole faction/ community has been constantly particular about anything to do with showing the prophet in any form of art.

I heard these articles a couple years ago and I mostly forgot about it, but after thinking about it again the other day I figured I'd post a topic about this. The first article is in 2 parts and its basically about how sea level rise is going to make an island nation non-existent in the future because of the amount of land they are loosing over time. But its also about how the people living there have faith in their religion that their land will be saved. I don't really see it working out too good for these people. The second article is about another island nation loosing land based on erosion due to dieing off coral reefs. Both are interesting reads.

After looking at these two articles I noticed the comments are filled with the constant political argument of Global Warming being a hoax. Fox News of course is the largest organization pushing the hoax opinion and its obvious their fanbase loves to spread their message. Regardless of the comments in the article, I think its a combination of sea level rise along with erosion and most likely improper treatment of beach front land that is causing these large issues. The US and many other countries fight off beach erosion by rebuilding beaches with sand pumping and building new reefs to help break waves along the coastlines. But for these small islands they don't have the resources to repair erosion, fix inundated land or repair reefs. There could the be case that the islands are sinking, but that wouldn't cause the islands to be under water in a mere 50 years. With all the factors involved, sea level rise does appear to be making a lot of the land uninhabitable.

With these facts most of the people living on these islands don't think anything bad is going to happen at all and often make jokes about climate change. Even with their own government issuing warnings about the changes happening to their islands and that moving to Australia may be a complete reality within half a century many of their citizens believe that God will not let anything happen to the islands and that everyone else is completely wrong. I can understand having faith.. but being ignorant of facts could really screw over these island communities.
