  1. I've owned 3 cars now. My first car was a 1993 Nissan Maxima. It had 110k miles on it and it served me well until 215k miles. An alternator and a break hose were the only major repairs I've ever had to have done on it. Then I got a 2004 Mazda3 which also served me well from 11k miles to 80k miles, a fuel purge sensor was the only major repair I ever had to do on it. I'd still have it if some kid didn't pull out in front of my and total it. With the insurance check I should have just put a nice down payment on a brand new car... but at the time I didn't want a car note so I got the only thing I could find... a 2004 Ford Mustang. It had less miles than my Mazda so I figured it was like I just had this car all along since it was the same year. Wrong, its been the biggest POS I've ever owned. I've had to have the power steering pump replaced twice, major exhaust work twice, serpentine belt, entire ABS system, read axle, front calipers, CV joint, motor fan, and the transmission that was put in to replace the already busted on they tried to sell the car with, is about to go out again... to top it all off the paint just started crumbling off the car and now its rusting. I bought it with 65k miles and now it has 116k miles. Now that my college loan is almost finally paid off, I'm looking to get a brand new Honda Civic or VW Golf. The Civic is a car I've always wanted since wanting a car, but the Golf is very nice and has more horsepower. I'll never buy another ford car again. I remember when my exhaust system basically fell off the car because the manifold cracked... the muffler shop I went to basically said "Yeah this is pretty common at 90k miles for this car" which I was pretty much at... wtf. Screw Ford. I've never had so many catastrophic failures with a vehicle.

So much repair work. Holy crap. I'll never buy an American brand car again. That old Chevy blazer I had ruined Chevy for me and your story will keep me away from Ford's from here on out. I've never looked at a VW golf until just now when i googled it. It looks nice. The Honda civic is a reliable car. I almost got one of those years ago but I went with toyota Corolla. My corolla has been great for the first 7 years but then I had a cooling issue that resulted in having to replace the car's computer because it was faulty. Aside from that I only had minor work done like brakes. Surprisingly enough my exhaust system is still rock solid and I'm still running the original muffler. My old Saturn went thru a muffler every 2 years. I did get the under coating when I bought it and I don't regret that $200 expense at all.

My brother bought a used car recently and the dealership had a 7 year warranty on the engine and transmission that didn't cost extra. Wtf. No dealerships around here have warranties like that.

They were pretty similar cars when you got yours, Civic has really stepped up its game, while the Corolla has fallen behind. Its pretty impressive how much Honda has packed into this car. Someone I went to school with got one recently and noted he opted for the Civic over the Accord because it had more to offer. Its actually more luxurious than the Golf, but the Golf has more driving performance. I've never been too big on luxury, but whatever I can get the best deal on between the two is what I'll go with. Right now there is a pretty decent deal on a Golf, but I have to wait for my tax return to come so I can get a good down payment.

Yeah that's a crazy deal. You only get a 90 day 5000 mile warranty for a used car around here. XD You're pretty much up shit creek if something goes wrong after that, which pretty much did on my Mustang. When it comes to American cars, it seems they're all built to break down after 70k miles, unless its a truck, those things last forever but they also cost $45-80k. My dad has a F150 with like 300k miles on it and its still going strong. Hes just had to replace some hoses and belts that dry rotted from being so old and worn. I've never been a truck fan, I like to be low to the ground and nimble. While trucks last a long time, the maintenance is still more expensive. Tires are astronomically more expensive and you still need to replace them with the same frequency. Gas mileage is subpar and to fill up is double or triple depending on your tank.

Hopefully I'll be able to get the Golf Wednesday if any are still there. I got preapproved for a loan at 1.99% APR for 60 months. The only problem is the Credit Union i chose for this rate is living in the stone age and doesn't do any type of electronic transmissions so I'm going to have to go back and forth with the bill of sale and then I'll have to drive up there to make payments... but no one else can touch 1.99% unless its like 34 months. Otherwise its like 2.5%. It'll be worth the inconvenience since its by my house and across the street from my job.
