Ladywriter got a reaction from Pchan in Solving the Amazon’s climate riddle
River basin played big role in ancient warming, scientists say
Dec. 21, 2000 - The Amazon River carves a 3,900-mile path through South America, from the cold Peruvian Andes to the tropical Atlantic coast. Its basin covers 2.3 million square miles, draining more fresh water than any other system in the world. That yawning basin is also yielding new information about the role of the tropics in global climate change. The ancient Amazon's flow appears to explain a mysterious, 10,000-year-old increase in ice-trapped methane, a greenhouse gas 20 times more efficient than carbon dioxide in global warming power, say Mark A. Maslin and Stephen J. Burns of the Environmental Chance Research Center at the University College-London.
Their findings, published in Friday’s issue of the journal Science, match two key pieces of the global climate puzzle: levels of methane imprisoned in polar ice, and the ever-changing “moisture history” of the Amazon Basin, where vast wetlands work overtime as methane biofactories.
The research won’t resolve the debate over how much global warming might result from human activities vs. natural processes. But it should ultimately help scientists paint a more accurate picture of global climate changes over time, taking into account the complex affects of the Amazon River Basin.Methane's migration
How could Amazonian methane reach the far-flung Greenland ice sheet? Like carbon dioxide, methane gas is mixed by air circulation into Earth’s atmosphere, explains Julio Betancourt of the U.S. Geological Survey, author of a Science essay on the study by Maslin and Burns. Methane and other atmospheric gases become trapped in air bubbles that form within the ice in both the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets, he notes. In Greenland, scientists have drilled to bedrock, 10,000 feet (3,050 meters) below the surface of the ice, to reconstruct past variations in atmospheric chemistry.
The Amazon Basin funnels up to 20 percent of all the fresh water dumped into the world’s seas, along with a billion tons of sediment, Betancourt points out. During periods of heavy rainfall, the Amazon’s wetlands expand, thereby increasing the production of methane, the principal component of natural gas. Also known as “swamp gas,” methane forms in wetlands when water cuts off the oxygen supply to soil, encouraging anaerobic fermentation via bacterial decomposition of plant matter.
At the same time, increased outflow from the Amazon Basin affects water’s movement, as fresh water entering the Atlantic Ocean is swept northward by the North Brazil Coastal Current. The only surface-water current to cross the equator, this strong force grabs hot, salty water and transports it to the North Atlantic, “eventually influencing surface waters that reach the Nordic seas through the Gulf Stream,” Betancourt says. But during glacial periods, strong winds deflect the current, sending it southward and to the east.
To track past Amazonian rainfall events, Maslin and Burns investigated the biochemical composition of fossilized plankton, exhumed from seafloor sediments near the Amazon’s terminal mixing bowl. Since they were mainly interested in the amount of fresh water being carried into the ocean from the Amazon Basin, the researchers focused on a particular species of single-celled marine organisms, Neogloboquadrina dutertrei. These creatures are known to favor cooler, deeper waters, where they avoid changes in salt content. By measuring the oxygen isotope composition in their hard calcite shells, Maslin and Burns documented historical changes in the Amazon’s outflow.
Earlier than 12,000 years ago, they learned, the Amazon Basin was high and dry, with discharge at least 60 percent below current levels. Then, as the ice age drew to a close about 10,000 years ago, Maslin believes, the rain began to fall — lots of it. Throughout the soggy Amazon Basin, swelling wetlands produced more and more methane. In fact, the river’s total discharge jumped by 40 percent, a level that “corresponds to the rapid increase in the atmospheric methane record,” the Science paper concludes.
Today, the Amazon Basin is wetter still, according to Maslin and Burns.
    Wetter-than-ever Amazon
A second Science study, based on pollen analysis, seems to confirm the notion of a wetter-than-ever Amazon. Francis E. Mayle and colleagues at the University of Leicester found that the climate-sensitive Bolivian rain forest has been stretching southward over the past several thousand years. Currently, its border is farther south than at any other time in the last 50,000 years, and some trees at the edge of this newly minted region are younger than 3,000 years old, Mayle reports.
What does all this mean for global climate? Betancourt says the increase in Amazon outflow and trapped methane corresponds with changes in the Amazon’s solar exposure, which dropped during the Younger Dryas period, at the end of the last ice age, then maxed out 3,000 years ago. Changes in solar irradiation may regulate convection over the Amazon, thus triggering shifts in the southward penetration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone. All of these forces alter water cycles and global climate.
Yet, Betancourt says, “Maslin and Burns’ elegant study is probably not the final word.” In particular, he contends, the ice-core methane increased too rapidly — in one or two centuries — to be explained by the gradual development of tropical wetlands.
“A theory now gaining popularity among paleoclimatologists,” he says, “is that these rapid increases in methane are produced by the catastrophic release of gas hydrates stored in marine sediments on the continental slopes.”
For their part, Maslin and Burns say the jury’s still out. Although the Amazon’s moisture level has never been higher, it’s unclear whether methane levels match. “The methane record,” they emphasize,” should still be regarded as a complex signal with varying contributions from other sources.”
The work adds much to our knowledge of complex global cycles, however. Insights into new species emergence may result from the research, too. Because tropical wetlands represent 60 percent of all wetlands worldwide, Burns notes, moisture levels in these regions strongly affect biological diversity. Now, he says: “We can start using realistic models to predict what changes have occurred to the rain forest in the past, and hence, what could have caused such a high degree of diversity.”

Ladywriter got a reaction from Myk JL in The Costs of Empire: Can We Really Afford 1,000 Overseas Bases?
By David Vine, Foreign Policy in Focus. Posted March 10, 2009.
In the midst of an economic crisis that's getting scarier by the day, it's time to ask whether the nation can really afford some 1,000 military bases overseas. For those unfamiliar with the issue, you read that number correctly. One thousand. One thousand U.S. military bases outside the 50 states and Washington, DC, representing the largest collection of bases in world history.
Officially the Pentagon counts 865 base sites, but this notoriously unreliable number omits all our bases in Iraq (likely over 100) and Afghanistan (80 and counting), among many other well-known and secretive bases. More than half a century after World War II and the Korean War, we still have 268 bases in Germany, 124 in Japan, and 87 in South Korea. Others are scattered around the globe in places like Aruba and Australia, Bulgaria and Bahrain, Colombia and Greece, Djibouti, Egypt, Kuwait, Qatar, Romania, Singapore, and of course, Guantánamo Bay, Cuba -- just to name a few. Among the installations considered critical to our national security are a ski center in the Bavarian Alps, resorts in Seoul and Tokyo, and 234 golf courses the Pentagon runs worldwide.
Unlike domestic bases, which set off local alarms when threatened by closure, our collection of overseas bases is particularly galling because almost all our taxpayer money leaves the United States (much goes to enriching private base contractors like corruption-plagued former Halliburton subsidiary KBR). One part of the massive Ramstein airbase near Landstuhl, Germany, has an estimated value of $3.3 billion. Just think how local communities could use that kind of money to make investments in schools, hospitals, jobs, and infrastructure.
Even the Bush administration saw the wastefulness of our overseas basing network. In 2004, then-Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld announced plans to close more than one-third of the nation's overseas installations, moving 70,000 troops and 100,000 family members and civilians back to the United States. National Security Adviser Jim Jones, then commander of U.S. forces in Europe, called for closing 20% of our bases in Europe. According to Rumsfeld's estimates, we could save at least $12 billion by closing 200 to 300 bases alone. While the closures were derailed by claims that closing bases could cost us in the short term, even if this is true, it's no reason to continue our profligate ways in the longer term.
Costs Far Exceeding Dollars and Cents
Unfortunately, the financial costs of our overseas bases are only part of the problem. Other costs to people at home and abroad are just as devastating. Military families suffer painful dislocations as troops stationed overseas separate from loved ones or uproot their families through frequent moves around the world. While some foreign governments like U.S. bases for their perceived economic benefits, many locals living near the bases suffer environmental and health damage from military toxins and pollution, disrupted economic, social, and cultural systems, military accidents, and increased prostitution and crime.
In undemocratic nations like Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Saudi Arabia, our bases support governments responsible for repression and human rights abuses. In too many recurring cases, soldiers have raped, assaulted, or killed locals, most prominently of late in South Korea, Okinawa, and Italy. The forced expulsion of the entire Chagossian people to create our secretive base on British Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean is another extreme but not so aberrant example.
Bases abroad have become a major and unacknowledged “face” of the United States, frequently damaging the nation's reputation, engendering grievances and anger, and generally creating antagonistic rather than cooperative relationships between the United States and others. Most dangerously, as we have seen in Saudi Arabia and Yemen, and as we are seeing in Iraq and Afghanistan, foreign bases create breeding grounds for radicalism, anti-Americanism, and attacks on the United States, reducing, rather than improving, our national security.
Proponents of maintaining the overseas base status quo will argue, however, that our foreign bases are critical to national and global security. A closer examination shows that overseas bases have often heightened military tensions and discouraged diplomatic solutions to international conflicts. Rather than stabilizing dangerous regions, our overseas bases have often increased global militarization, enlarging security threats faced by other nations who respond by boosting military spending (and in cases like China and Russia, foreign base acquisition) in an escalating spiral. Overseas bases actually make war more likely, not less.
    The Benefits of Fewer Bases
This isn't a call for isolationism or a protectionism that would prevent us from spending money overseas. As the Obama administration and others have recognized, we must recommit to cooperative forms of engagement with the rest of the world that rely on diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties rather than military means. In addition to freeing money to meet critical human needs at home and abroad, fewer overseas bases would help rebuild our military into a less overstretched, defensive force committed to defending the nation's territory from attack.
In these difficult economic times, the Obama administration and Congress should initiate a major reassessment of our 1,000 overseas bases. Now is the time to ask if, as a nation and a world, we can really afford the 1,000 bases that are pushing the nation deeper into debt and making the United States and the planet less secure? With so many needs facing our nation, it's unconscionable to have 1,000 overseas bases. It's time to begin closing them.

That's the amount of extra cash each and every Burger King employee in America would have received last year if Goldman Sachs (one of the fast-food chain's largest owners) had shared its bailout billions with rank-and-file workers. Instead, Goldman Sachs squandered 6.5 billion of our taxpayer dollars on bonuses for their financial staff. These were some of the highest bonuses on Wall Street! Meanwhile, Burger King workers earn wages averaging just $14,000 a year -- well below the federal poverty line for a family of three.

Update: Most if not all of the products listed above which formerly contained phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride have been reformulated to eliminate the ingredient. Consumer questions about phenylpropanolamine and its potential health hazards may be directed to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration at 1-888-INFO-FDA.
Some manufacturers of over-the-counter medicines containing phenylpropanolamine have offered refunds to consumers who purchased the products before they were voluntarily recalled in late 2000. To inquire about the availability of such refunds, dial the 800-number for consumer questions listed on the product packaging.
Comments by Carla Homan: This email has it mostly right. In November 2000, the FDA issued a public health advisory about phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride (PPA), the drug mentioned in the email. This drug is found in many over the counter (OTC) medicines, specifically in cold and flu remedies, as well as appetite suppressants. The drug will likely be banned, but because this process takes time, the FDA issued the health advisory in the meantime and manufacturers are voluntarily recalling and/or reformulating medicines containing PPA.
The main problem with this drug is that it elevates your risk of having a hemorrhagic stroke, especially with (but not limited to) first time use among women. Because the uses of PPA are not serious enough to warrant taking even that small chance, the FDA recommends that you stop taking any medications containing the drug.
Rather than looking at a limited list such as the one contained in the above email, you'd be better off checking the package of any cold, flu or appetite suppressant medication for the drug, which will appear in the list of active ingredients and may be listed as phenylpropanolamine, phenylpropanolamine hydrochloride, or phenylpropanolamine bitartrate. Many manufacturers offer several formulations of their cold and flu remedies, some of which do not contain PPA. Pseudoephedrine is an effective alternative to PPA for use in cold and flue preparations, but unfortunately, there is no approved alternative OTC drug for use in appetite suppressants. Therefore, if you are using any OTC medications to suppress your appetite for weight loss or other reasons, you should stop using the medicine and talk to your doctor about getting a prescription drug instead. Additionally, some prescription decongestants and cold and flu preparations contain PPA, so if you are using any prescription medicines for these purposes, talk to the prescribing doctor to see if you should continue using the medicine.
One word of caution: Though the email states your risk is for "increased hemorrhagic stroke (bleeding in brain) among women ages 18-49 in the three days after starting use of medication," don't think you are safe if you've used the drug for longer than three days. The three-day window was merely one of the guidelines used in the study that prompted the health advisory; for the study, they defined PPA exposure as having used PPA within three days prior to the stroke. Risk of stroke may be present after three days of use. For detailed information, see the final report of the Hemorrhagic Stroke Project, Web-published by the FDA.
As always, your best resources for reliable information on medicines and medical conditions are your own physician and pharmacist.

Ladywriter got a reaction from Myk JL in URGENT: Stop the Auto Bailout
    December 10, 2008
    Dear fellow Patriot,
Just as we promised, Congressional leaders weren't content with
their $700 billion bailout this past fall and are ready to pass
another one -- this time for the American automotive industry.
Visit our activist Liberty Blog at
http://www.campaignforliberty.com to learn how you can help fight
this round of government theft and wealth redistribution, or just
    keep reading.
In the agreement just formulated earlier today by Congressional
Democrats and the White House, our government has pledged to
wrest another $23 billion away from taxpayers to subsidize the
inefficiency and reward the poor management and performance of --
count them -- one, two, three giant corporations.
    But that's not all.
More intervention like this means greater government oversight
and regulation -- and more inflation as the government prints and
    spends even more dollars.
As one economic thinker once reflected, a subsidy may be a form
of establishment, but it's really a means of capture.
Even if the bailout passes the house, we have a chance to muster
    some opposition in the Senate.
Using the contact information provided on our website, tell your
Senator to support the Ensign filibuster. While you're at it,
thank Senator Ensign for standing up to Big Labor and Big
    Business.
    Auto Bailout Looming
It looks like the White House and Congressional Democrat
leadership have reached a deal on the auto bailout, although
there aren't very many details at this point.
Plans for a "car czar" seem to still be included as part of the
deal. So, not only will your money be spent for the bailout, it
will be used to pay a new government appointee, staff his office,
and take care of the other requirements that come along with that
job. (It also gives them one more person to shift the blame to
    when the problems continue.)
All of this is being done again, of course, out of "necessity,"
we are told. Just like buying up all the toxic assets was a
"necessity" until the Treasury got the money and decided to spend
it on everything but. This is what happens when the majority of
Congress is not guided by any philosophy other than the one that
says that government can cure all of our ills with just a little
