Act Now to Protect Oceans From Acidification

Recommended Posts

Our oceans are in serious trouble. As they absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, the CO2 reacts with seawater, causing it to become more acidic. This spells trouble for marine life because corrosive waters make it difficult for animals to build their protective shells. You can help protect oceans from acidification by writing a letter to the Environmental Protection Agency today.

Already, the oceans have become about 30 percent more acidic as fossil-fuel combustion increases the amount of CO2 they absorb. Ocean acidification, global warming's evil twin, is one of the greatest threats to ocean ecosystems. For the first time, the Environmental Protection Agency is beginning a public process to determine approaches to addressing this sleeper crisis under the Clean Water Act.

Take a moment now -- before the June 15th deadline -- to ask the Environmental Protection Agency to act quickly to address acidification before it inflicts irreversible damage to life below the sea's surface.
