Google losing it's search quality?

Recommended Posts

Is it just me or is anyone else not finding things as easily on google anymore? Its like when I search for something I mostly find sites that are heavy with advertisements or just splash pages that are just advertisements. I remember when I used to search for something and within the first page I'd find pretty much exactly what I wanted. But now its not much better for me than most other search engines I used to use prior to google's dominance. But I've used google for so long I forget which other search engines are good out there.

Anyone have any search engine recommendations?

Google is coming up empty handed lately or way off the mark. I hate MSN and Yahoo so I won't use those. Google used to be so good...

:nosebleed:

I've been finding exactly what I've been looking for on Google Video... Well until I find proof Google Video can give you a virus... But nope... I haven't noticed any changes.

Man I remember back in the early 90s when Webcrawler was king. I just visited it for the first time in almost a decade, and the first 15 links of my search were to advertiser's sites. I'm afraid Google has a monopoly, and thus has declined.

All search engines are crap now, instead of giving you the results you want they all give you the results they want you to have. Bottom line, no results you need or were looking for. I agree, and I'll leave it up to Sledge to keep us informed when there's a solution or new search engine, he's usually first to know anyhow.

Webcrawler! X'D I remember that way back when. That reminds me of Excite and altavista.

And I hate to say this, but microsoft's live.com was decent for a while, although I haven't tried them lately.

X'D I forgot about Excite. Altavista has the same exact results as Google pretty much along with alltheweb.

Any chance, pissed google search uses can all sign a petition telling google to stop result spam. There might already be one for us all to sign. All I know is those political take action petitions in the take action forum work, I'm pissed on a daily basis, even simple searches are horrible.

I don't think theres a petition. yeah, its pretty bad that wikipedia has better search results for information than google. Of course wiki search will never show other websites tho. :\

And check this out! Someone else is noticing the same decline with google and has a good article about it with compared searches between delicious.com and google.com

it might be posted above,

anyhow, when I needed an answer to a question, I'd just google it. Been doing that and I always get at least one result that answers my question, it's always yahoo answers. So I think I'll bypass the middle man and just go there to find info. Not sure if it's got all the content I need, but it's answered my recent need for info

In a surprising move, Amazon has purchased Twitch, beating out the looming Google / YouTube acquisition.
This should be a good move for twitch. Amazon definitely has the hardware to support the site.

I'm sure everyone has heard about this already, if not check the links below for the full information on the story:

It sounds like Google is saying that everyone's privacy is safe, except for the people that email gmail accounts from email accounts outside of google.. But wouldn't that imply that gmail user is having their incoming emails read and thus their privacy is being affected as well?

The thing is, pretty much all email is insecure and people don't realize it.

Whenever you send an email, it is on the server you sent it from and another copy of it is on the server it was received at. Key employees at whatever data centers those servers are located in, can access and read that email in its entirety. Emails can also be read by hosting companies, the hosting company's web host and up the chain all the way to the data center staff. The larger the corporation, the more employees that could potentially have access to your email. If you connect to a free wifi somewhere and access your email through a smartphone app that is not set for secure ssl connections, then any wifi network admin can access or log your email and any other user on that wifi system could technically access your email as long as they know how to do it. Email is not secure. All the companies that can access it have privacy policies just like google. All employees are restricted to accessing personal information and are only supposed to do it when assisting a customer with an issue. The shear bulk of email out there pretty much limits individuals from wanting to spy on you specifically, but with all these large companies data mining everything out there, I can see why people would be concerned about their data being used to profile them.

From what I've seen, they don't just scan the one email when they display an ad on your page.. they give you massive storage space so it can scan all emails to target their ads for you. What do you think? Is google harvesting people's emails to add to their massive data mining operation? or are they only scanning your emails for advertisements?

BTW, have you every used google maps? If you use it over the years then they know your address thats associated to your IP#.. clear your browser cache, delete all cookies, etc.. then go back to google maps, start typing your address and watch how quickly google remembers who you are. (then again, they might have changed this, I haven't tested it lately.)

This phone will always be listening.. As if people weren't concerned before about the Kinect watching and listening to you.. now your smartphone will listen in on everything as it waits to hear its voice commands. I would only like this feature if I had the option to turn it off.

Thats a nice feature.. shake the camera to enable camera and then take a quick pic.. at least until you start jogging.. then your phone will be taking a bunch of pictures of the inside of your pants.

In my opinion, I would never buy this phone. Mostly because it is a Motorola.. and this is why I would never buy a Motorola:

When I first heard about Google Glass I thought it was a dumb concept. Now here it is a few years later and Google is going through with their creation. This accessory will connect to your smart phone / device and it will allow the wearer to access parts of the internet and take pictures / videos of everything they see. They could technically stream their entire day online. I don't think employers would allow it in the workplace.. but that won't stop individuals from now recording everyone without their consent and uploading everything to youtube.

What do you think about Google Glass? Will you be interested in getting one? Or will you be more irritated by people wearing them because you'll have to assume they are always recording?
