In an interview with OPM (Original Playstation Magazine), Infinity Ward’s animation lead Zach Volker went into some details about the new game engine that will be powering the upcoming game "Call of Duty Ghost".

Here are a couple quotes from the interview to summarize:

Volker told me: “When we’re talking about a new engine we’re talking about upgrading significant systems within in that engine. We’re not talking about throwing it all away and saying we’re starting from the ground up”. The reworking of the old engine to create the new engine is, says Volker, because it’s, “impossible to develop a new engine from the ground up in a two year cycle”. Instead it come down to the amount that the current tech has changed. “What we do is we say, ‘okay what are the things that are significant and that we would say that are encompassing of the engine or its visual quality?” explains Volker. “Are those being upgraded in a significant way? Alright, then I think that warrants that we’ve got a new engine on our hands”.

OPM Can you say what tech the new engine’s built on?

ZV The original engine years ago was built on Quake engine. We’ve done so many new engines and overhauls on top of that I’m not sure any of it still exists.

OPM Is it still built from the original tech or is it built on something new?

ZV When we’re talking about a new engine we’re talking about upgrading significant systems within in that engine. We’re not talking about throwing it all away and saying we’re starting from the ground up. It comes down to the systems we’re augmenting and upgrading, and trying to decide what is the significance of this upgrade. So there is certainly going to be remnants here and there of our pieces of our last engine, where it was appropriate when, you know what, this doesn’t need any changing.

Infinity Ward has been significantly upgrading its existing game engine for the past 2 years. While it can be claimed that the end result is a new game engine, it is not a new engine built from the ground up. Which means that Ghost will be running an upgraded game engine that was most likely used in "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3"

If CoD brought back tanks or some other vehicles, or at least increased the amount of players, then they might have a good game. But if its mostly 6 vs. 6 TDM with more elaborate kill streaks, then that would be weak. I've never owned any of the CoDs before Black Ops 2, and if the next game is just an upgraded version of that with some new guns and maps, then I could see it getting stale pretty quick.

I'll probably still get it for the campaign at some point.. I'll just buy it used someday.. but not for Xbox One..

Tanks didn't make COD a better game! XD They werent on every map... and it took like 5-6 RPGs to take them out... and you still only had 2 rockets back then... they were SUPER overpowered. If they bring back Stopping Power.. ill pick it up for sure... that or bring back the map "Pipeline".

Call of Duty: Ghosts suffers 19% sales drop over Black Ops II

Analyst firm Cowen & Company has declared that sales for Call of Duty: Ghosts are down 19 per cent on last year’s Call of Duty: Black Ops II.

Despite the game’s publisher Activision having predicted a drop due to the transition to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, the analyst feels that the industry giant should be concerned about its flagship first-person shooter franchise.

"Upon further reflection, we think the [Call of Duty] numbers are a bit more troubling than they first appeared," said Cowen & Company’s Doug Creutz (via Gamesbeat). "While the year-over-year gap is only 19 percent thus far, that includes two extra weeks of sales for the 360 and PS3 versions [of Black Ops II]. Against 2011′s [Modern Warfare 3], where the difference is only one week, the title is down 32 percent life-to-date."

"We don't think it is out of the question that the title could wind up comparing down 20 percent to 25 percent year-over-year [to Black Ops II], which is appreciably worse than the down 10 to 15 percent that we think is baked in to guidance,” he added.

Looks like people are starting to get tired of buying the same game. :P

It shouldn't be surprising. Keep the path they're on and their delusional fanboys will be their only customers. The reason I've continued to buy Battlefield games is because it keeps the same learning curve that rewards those that have invested time into their previous games for already have mastering the basic mechanics. They only add new folds. As I've stated many times COD has continually dumbed down their games to help n00bs have an even playing field with experienced players with out having to put in the same dedication to become skilled. This has created a culture of cheap game play and tactics which their maps further encourage rather than counteract. I think gaining xp via bots without even having to turn your console on turned off a lot of serious FPS players. What is the point of playing when people can rank by getting a lot of fellow boosters to keep playing against their bots? Not to mention the many MW2 glitches that still work on this game despite the fact that they were fixed in MW2.
