The Next Small Thing Since Ouya.... GameStick.

Recommended Posts

I recently went digging through news & found out about this.

I'd like to be excited but it doesn't offer the plausibility to make games as far as I can tell like the Ouya advertised back last year. The first Micro Console & my first time I ever pledged. That pledge being $225 which I may or may not regret come this March if & when Ouya comes out.

If anything I'm more worried about an over saturation of Micro Consoles via Kickstarter.

I probably won't be funding this one but the Kickstarter page is right here if anyone wants more info.

Ouya is a console that appeared on kickstarter that claims to be fully open source... every console has dev kit capabilities so you can become your own developer. Interesting concept, and it could be a breakthrough for free-to-play gaming... or a major flop.

I would've posted about Ouya last year, but I didn't want to think about the unofficial / youtube statements that declared the console a scam / vaporware. My pledge ended up being a big risk (due to reasons that are ultimately off-topic). But I think I'm finally financially recovering from all that from last year.

Ouya pulled in $8,596,474 on their Kickstarter Page before time ran out.

Ah yes, I remember the Phantom being in the news multiple times and then never turning into a sell-able product. If I remember correctly everyone would need a minimum of road runner turbo to run it. So imagine if someone was trying to run netflix while someone else downloaded a large file, those games would have glitched out like a bastard.

Looks like the Ouya will be sold in stores starting in June:

OUYA, an Android-powered videogame console funded on crowd-funding site Kickstarter, will begin selling through Amazon, Gamestop and several other retailers.

Preorders for both consoles and controllers will start being accepted on Tuesday, in advance of retail availability in June 2013. Additional retailers include Target and Best Buy, who will sell the console for about $100.

Here is a quick run down on what the game is about:
They have recently started work on the single player campaign, and this is the most recent video they have released:

This game is going to be gigantic and it's potential is huge. Imagine it, over $32 million in funds for a company dedicated to making a single game.

I haven't paid much attention to Star Citizen, but with the constant updates I've seen about huge sums of money, I had to look into this. Star Citizen is the project of Chris Roberts, the creator of Wing Commander. He wanted to make the best space game ever, completely funded by his fans, and he is going to accomplish it. After starting his crowd funding campaign on his own website and kickstarter last year, they have now reached over $32,000,000. Yes.. over $32 Million.
As the large sums of money keep pouring in, there are new funding goals added for every million dollar mark.

I'll probably settle for donating $65 if I make a donation around the end of this month. Wish they had a cheaper version of "100% Complete Launch Pak" without a T-Shirt. (They should know better about the T Shirt thing since almost everyone on PS Home hates T-Shirts.)

Even if this Kickstarter reaches its Goal I highly doubt anyone using this will be allowed to publish on PS Home. On the other hand I would really hope we could.
