Details About Valve’s Steam Box!

Recommended Posts

Kotaku has a good article about the new details revealed today about Valve's Steam Box, a PC dedicated to the steam platform for PC gaming:

Some of the main things he touches on:

• Valve's own Steam Box (Gabe actually refers to it as this) will be sold by Valve and will run Linux, though you can install Windows on it if you want. "This is not some locked box by any stretch of the imagination", he says.

• The controller shipping with Valve's Steam Box won't use motion, but as expected, they will probably use some kind of biometric feedback. "Maybe the motion stuff is just failure of imagination on our part, but we're a lot more excited about biometrics as an input method." He also mentions gaze-tracking as being "super important".

• Valve wants you to make your own Steam stores. "Some people will create team stores, some people will creates Sony stores, some people will create stores with only games that they think meet their quality bar. Somebody is going to create a store that says 'these are the worst games on Steam.' So that's an example of where our thinking is leading us right now."

• The Steam Box - code-named "Bigfoot" at Valve - won't just be a PC. It'll be a server, too, with the near future enabling you to "have one PC and eight televisions and eight controllers and everybody getting great performance out of it". The LAN party just made a comeback. Only without all the cables.

Wow. This could be huge. I honestly wouldn't mind owning a pc dedicated to steam games. Maybe with a steam box being mass produced we could get a powerful gaming PC at a decent price.

I'm going to have to see whether or not it can do Mods & Games outside of Steam. Because there's a lot of Adult Only content that I want to get for Elder Scrolls. And maybe I want to buy games from J-List.

Aside from previous money issues "The Steam Box" has been a reason to why I have to get a new PC. Glad though it can also run Windows since I had to buy Windows 7 Ultimate before Windows 8 came out.

Side Note: I hope the next code name Microsoft tries to go for is Grave Digger after how bad Windows 8 is.

Those who fight deplorables should see to it that they themselves do not become deplorables.

I just read this article about some pc's coming with a free downgrade to windows 7:

Seeing as the guy in the interview mentioned that the steam box would be primarily linux, but windows could be installed I would think that extra software and mods could be installed as well.

Every once in a while I'll come across free games for PC that look really good. Anyone can feel free to update this topic with limited time free game links so we can add them to our ever growing backlog of games. If a game states how long it will be free for, please list that along with the link. Sometimes it won't be stated so if you click a link and its no longer free, then that promo must have expired. I've seen alot of free game listings off slickdeals or other blogs. I'll update this when I see good ones. I would post the free games with Amazon Prime, but I don't currently have amazon prime so if those appeal to anyone, feel free to post them since Amazon Prime generally gives away a couple free games a month.
      To start off with:
Little Nightmares is currently free with a Steam promotion until 05/30/2021 @ 10:00am (does not say if EDT, PDT, etc. )

Company of Heroes 2, Company of Heroes 2 Ardennes Assault - Limited Free Promotional Package, free for this weekend or until 05/31/2021? It doesn't say exact day it ends.

Steam has made its own hand held game console. It can be used as a handheld or docked to a tv like the Nintendo Switch. Honestly, this looks like a solid hand held. Everyone that does PC gaming has a steam account and most likely alot of games already in their library.
There are three versions: $399, $529 & $649 depending on the internal storage. Its shipping December of 2021.

      The hardware looks great too:

The new PlayStation 4 firmware update will include external HHD support for game installation. Finally. I honestly didn't realize the original PS4s even had USB 3. They are also finally adding custom wallpapers via screenshots. About damn time. The wallpapers in the online store are complete garbage. I'd still prefer to use my own .jpg files like on the PS3, but modders used that feature as a way to hack the system which is why we never got the functionality in PS4. Using a screenshot is completely fine with me.
