Changing global climate with giant balloons and garden hoses

Recommended Posts

One way to combat global warming is for us to stop emitting greenhouse gases. Really, it's the best way. But if we can't make that happen, Plan B is to just zero out artificial global warming with artificial global cooling, and an ambitious test involving giant balloons spraying water is about to take place off the coast of Britain.

A relatively easy way to cool down the planet would be to send some of the solar energy Earth gets exposed to back out into space. The ice caps (being white and reflective) do a good job at this, but they're not big enough (and shrinking fast), so British researchers have come up with a reflective chemical substitute. The idea is that they'd spray massive amounts of aerosols into the upper atmosphere (about twelve miles up), where they'd reflect enough sunlight to make a dent in global temperatures.

To get these chemicals up to where they need to be in bulk, the SPICE Project (Stratospheric Particle Injection for Climate Engineering) has settled on tying what is effectively a very very long garden hose to a very very large balloon, sending it up into the stratosphere, and then pumping chemicals up the hose and out the top where the balloon is. To test out the concept, a small scale experiment has been scheduled involving a balloon that goes up only a little over half a mile, with a hose attached to it that sprays water. If it goes well, a full-scale test (involving a balloon that's 600 feet wide lifting a few hundred tons of hose over 10 miles into the air to spray actual chemicals) could come next.

As you might expect, lots of people are saying that this is an utterly crazy idea. And it's true, nobody wants to have to resort to such drastic measures. But the SPICE Project says that what they're working on really is just a contingency plan, in preparation for the unlikely event that governments and industry don't manage to drastically cut their greenhouse emissions as fast as they need to, to keep us all from frying to a crisp.

Interesting.. I wonder if this could work.. I also wonder if hundrends of tons of hose 10 miles in the air crashing down could cause a tsunami. O_O

Yeah definitely interesting .. I actually like the idea but it's all going to depend on the outlook of whoever's in charge of those water balloons. Also, with water being in shortage in many parts of the world, this is more like a 'leisure' as compared.

I am putting myself to the fullest possible use, which is all I think that any conscious entity can ever hope to do.

I heard these articles a couple years ago and I mostly forgot about it, but after thinking about it again the other day I figured I'd post a topic about this. The first article is in 2 parts and its basically about how sea level rise is going to make an island nation non-existent in the future because of the amount of land they are loosing over time. But its also about how the people living there have faith in their religion that their land will be saved. I don't really see it working out too good for these people. The second article is about another island nation loosing land based on erosion due to dieing off coral reefs. Both are interesting reads.

After looking at these two articles I noticed the comments are filled with the constant political argument of Global Warming being a hoax. Fox News of course is the largest organization pushing the hoax opinion and its obvious their fanbase loves to spread their message. Regardless of the comments in the article, I think its a combination of sea level rise along with erosion and most likely improper treatment of beach front land that is causing these large issues. The US and many other countries fight off beach erosion by rebuilding beaches with sand pumping and building new reefs to help break waves along the coastlines. But for these small islands they don't have the resources to repair erosion, fix inundated land or repair reefs. There could the be case that the islands are sinking, but that wouldn't cause the islands to be under water in a mere 50 years. With all the factors involved, sea level rise does appear to be making a lot of the land uninhabitable.

With these facts most of the people living on these islands don't think anything bad is going to happen at all and often make jokes about climate change. Even with their own government issuing warnings about the changes happening to their islands and that moving to Australia may be a complete reality within half a century many of their citizens believe that God will not let anything happen to the islands and that everyone else is completely wrong. I can understand having faith.. but being ignorant of facts could really screw over these island communities.
